Jane and I were reading for almost an hour when the motion light flicked on. Our eyes met as a distinct eeriness fell upon us. “Do you think it’s Stone?” Jane whispered. I doubted it. It seemed odd for Stone to be wandering in my backyard this late without telling me. “I don’t think so,” I replied. Slowly, I rose and walked toward the kitchen’s light switch. My foot fell asleep, causing me to stumble a little. Behind me, Jane closed the laptop shut, as I flipped it off. Darkness consumed us, along with an unsettling stillness. Jane’s silhouette stood up.
