I went back to the archive at six in the morning. Not the east reading room. Not the sealed section, not yet, not without knowing exactly what I'm looking for and how long I have before someone notices. I go to the open stacks on the ground floor, the public section, the long room with the high shelves and the narrow windows that let in light in thin columns at this hour, moving across the floor as the sun angle changes, slow and precise like something measuring. The archive opens at six for senior students and faculty. I've been coming here since I was fourteen, first for legitimate research, then for the tactical manuals, then for the habit of it, the particular quiet that archives have that is different from other kinds of quiet.
