chapter 7 seven

The knock came just after eight in the evening. Will stared at the black envelope lying on his desk for what felt like the hundredth time. He had hoped whoever sent it would disappear if he ignored it, but the knock on his apartment door told him otherwise. He slowly walked towards the door. "Who is it?" "Mr. Daniels?" A calm voice answered. "We've come to escort you." Will frowned. Escort? He carefully opened the door just enough to peek outside. Two men dressed in perfectly tailored black suits stood in the corridor. Their expressions were blank, almost emotionless. One of them stepped forward. "Good evening, sir." Will folded his arms. "I don't think I know either of you." "You don't." "Then why are you at my apartment?" The taller man handed him a small black card. "Our employer wishes to meet with you." Will glanced at the card. There was no address. No company logo. Only four words. Mr. Alvin awaits you.His heartbeat quickened. Alvin... He had heard that name before. Everyone in Lagos had. Some called him a billionaire businessman. Others whispered darker things whenever his name came up. Will looked back at the men. "I'm not interested." The shorter man smiled politely. "Our boss wasn't asking." Silence settled between them. Will looked from one man to the other before letting out a quiet sigh. "If I refuse?" "You still end up meeting him." The answer was calm. Too calm. Will knew better than to argue. He grabbed his phone, locked his apartment and followed them downstairs. Outside, a black Rolls-Royce Phantom waited beside the road, its polished body reflecting the streetlights. People walking past slowed down to stare. Some even stopped. Will swallowed nervously before climbing into the back seat. Across town... Brielle sat cross-legged on her bed, surrounded by thick law textbooks. She had been staring at the same page for almost twenty minutes without reading a single sentence. Every time she tried to focus, Daisy's words echoed inside her head. "Don't touch what isn't yours... or else." She shut the book with a frustrated sigh. "I'm losing my mind." Janet, who had come over to study, looked up from her notebook. "You've been saying that all evening." "I'm serious."Janet leaned back in her chair. "You're still thinking about that woman?" Brielle nodded. "Something about her felt..." She paused. "Wrong." Janet reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "Maybe she's just crazy." "I hope so." Before Brielle could say another word, her phone buzzed. A message from Will. 'Busy tonight. Rain check on tomorrow's study session?' She smiled. 'Sure. Don't overwork yourself.' He replied almost immediately. 'You too, Counselor Cole.' She laughed softly. Janet raised an eyebrow. "Will?"Brielle nodded. "He's impossible." "But he makes you smile." Brielle rolled her eyes. "He's just my friend." Janet wasn't convinced.
