David told me to stop overreacting, saying everyone was just messing around. He told me to go to bed first, promising he'd drive me to the office the next morning. But he didn't get back until dawn had already broken. He didn't even step inside the house. The second he pulled up, he parked right outside the front door. I reached for the passenger door like I always did, only to find a little kid propped up there with his legs crossed. The second he saw me, he rolled his eyes so hard I thought they'd get stuck, and curled his lip like I was something he'd scraped off the bottom of his shoe. "Bad woman! You're a bad woman!"
