Chapter3

Guilty Conscience “I am here now, sir. You do not need to worry about anything." Joshua announced his presence in the Alvin office in a spectacular manner. He tried his best not to give Alvin the slightest clue that something went wrong outside the office. “Here's the briefcase I brought with me as well. I am truly sorry for what took place.” Josh narrated without a break. He knew this was only his shot at redemption, and he was willing to make the best of the moment. "Because of what transpired, you must truly despise me,” Joshua confessed. He stood a few miles away from Alvin while narrating the incident that occurred at the bank. He knew he had made a mistake, but he did not have the courage to approach Alvin and hand him the briefcase. How merciless Alvin is. After stabbing Joshua, he could dispose of his body in the lagoon. The entire staff shudders at the mention of his name. Everyone is afraid of him and stays out of his way. Joshua has witnessed that happen countless times to everyone, including Jenny's mother, who is currently the most recent casualty. It was discovered a few months ago that an ex-employee had stolen a bar of gold from the gold mine. Alvin chooses to act unconcerned by the incident rather than calling the police. The thief was released without making a fuss by him. The former employee was discovered dead in what appeared to be a suicide in his flat the following day. Because there was insufficient evidence to prove that Alvin killed the former employee. A few staff members who were aware of the gold theft suspected him of being responsible for the death. To avoid drawing attention to themselves, they believed that he made the death appear to be a suicide. Joshua is terrified and almost urinates in his pants at the prospect of becoming like that ex-staff. “Are you done speaking?” There was a long silence before Alvin finally voiced out. Joshua nodded in a panic mode, “Yes, sir.” “This performance is worthy of an Oscar. You performed admirably. Consider pursuing a career in acting.” Alvin made a travesty of Joshua. “I wanted to make things clear, so I thought I should apologize and tell you about my experience at the bank. I am sure you have already heard about it. Still, I wanted to make sure you heard from both sides,” Joshua clarified. “I do not require your apology, so screw it. Money is all that matters to me. You are not making any progress with your apology. The fact that you made a mistake and should be dealt with will not be altered by it.” Alvin slammed the desk in annoyance while disregarding Joshua's display of remorse. “Is the briefcase somewhere? I do not care about anything else currently,” Alvin demanded shortly after berating Joshua for his incompetence. Pointing to the briefcase, Joshua said, “Right here, Boss.” “Do you want me to come get it myself? You are not doing yourself any favors. You are exacerbating the situation beyond what it appears to be.” Alvin said, putting his hands beneath his jawline as he waited for Joshua to step forward. “You could hurt me. I am aware of your potential. I cannot risk being right next to you, much less leaving the case on your desk.” Josh freaked out. His eyes darted around the office's four walls to make sure Alvin was all by himself and not part of a group of people. In a cunning move, he looked at Alvin's legs to make sure he was not carrying a gun. “It is great that you admitted your incapacity without blaming anyone. Your honesty is evident from that alone, and I appreciate honest people. Because of this, I will not harm you.” He vowed. His initial plan was to slam Josh's head against the wall and watch him die from bleeding. Lucky Josh, Alvin decided against it. “Are you certain about this?” Josh queried. He had doubts that Alvin would let him go without causing him harm. “I am a man of few words. I do not break my promises. Come sit in front of me, put the briefcase down on the desk, and let us resume our conversation. I need you to do some errands for me.” Josh was still standing there, not convinced enough. He did not even try to move one foot from his current position. He does not believe a word Alvin says, much less his actions. He believes there was deception and malice. “If you continue to stand there and act like a dummy while asking me pointless questions, I will have to reconsider. If you do not come, you can continue to stand with the briefcase indefinitely.” Alvin lost his cool, only to concentrate on his computer afterward. “I apologize, sir. Disregard my foolish demeanor.” Josh sat down in front of Alvin and put the briefcase on the desk. “Let us get started, sir. We have the briefcase. Should I open it so you can verify the funds?” he said, gesturing towards the briefcase. Alvin is bothered by Josh's body language. He does not appear to be in excellent health. He was growing shaky and restless. "I did nothing. Boss, I am doing fine. I’m just scared and anxious,” Josh shuddered. “How come you are afraid? I told you it was safe already. I hope you will stop worrying about insignificant things. I am not going to hurt you; I have said that a thousand times.” Alvin facepalms. He was tired of repeating the assurance a thousand times. He wishes that Joshua would just trust him for a second. “Is the funding complete?” After removing a bundle of dollar notes, Alvin asked. He perceived the mints and put them down. “It is complete, of course. Before I left the bank, I made sure of it. Following what happened? I would be foolish to make another mistake.” Even though he still had his doubts, Joshua reassured Alvin. He was not prepared to lose this either, having already fumbled and almost lost the first check.
