Chapter 7: The Treasure Hunt

543 Words
The cold night air carried the faint scent of damp earth and pine as Lily and Noah hurried home from Mrs Harper’s house. The old map and William Harper’s journal were tucked safely inside Lily’s backpack, and their minds buzzed with excitement. “We have to figure out what the map leads to,” Noah whispered as they tiptoed into the house. Lily nodded, closing the door quietly behind them. “But we can’t just run off in the middle of the night. We need a plan.” Noah groaned. “A plan means waiting.” “It means being smart,” Lily corrected. “Let’s start by studying the map.” They spread the aged parchment across Lily’s desk, comparing it to a digital map of their town on her tablet. The roads matched, but there was one key difference—the old map showed a wooded area that no longer existed in the town’s modern layout. Instead, it had been replaced by Evergreen Park. Noah’s eyes widened. “The treasure must be buried there!” Lily frowned. “Or something important is hidden there. We need to check it out first thing in the morning.” **Clues in the Park** The next morning, after convincing their parents they were just going to the park to “get some fresh air,” Lily and Noah grabbed their bikes and rode to Evergreen Park. The moment they arrived, they realized this wouldn’t be easy—the park was huge. “Where do we even start?” Noah asked, scanning the area. Lily pulled out the map and traced her finger along the faded ink. “There’s a marker here… near an old oak tree.” Noah grinned. “Perfect. Let’s go tree-hunting.” They searched the park, checking every large tree they passed, until finally, they found it—a towering oak tree near the far edge of the park, its trunk thick and gnarled with age. “This has to be it,” Lily said, running her fingers over the bark. Noah started digging around the roots with his hands, expecting to find a buried treasure chest. “Where’s the ‘X’?” Lily rolled her eyes. “It’s not a pirate treasure, Noah. Look for something unusual.” Just then, Noah’s fingers scraped against something hard and metallic. “I found something!” he gasped, brushing away the dirt. Lily knelt beside him as he pulled out a rusty metal box. The lid was stuck, but after a few forceful pulls, it finally creaked open. Inside was a small key and a folded piece of parchment. Lily unfolded the paper carefully. It was another clue. "To find what was lost, seek the place where stories rest." Noah groaned. “Could this be any more cryptic?” Lily’s eyes lit up. “Wait! I think I know where to go next.” **A New Destination** The clue had to mean the town library—a place filled with stories. “We need to get to the library,” Lily said. Noah picked up the small key. “And maybe this unlocks something there.” As they raced back to their bikes, their hearts pounded with excitement. The adventure was just getting started.
