The Unspoken Bond
Lena walked briskly into the gym, her headphones securely in place as the music blasted in her ears, blocking out the noise of the bustling street outside. She was used to this routine now work, the gym, and then home. No distractions. No time for anything else.
She set her gym bag down by the weights section, scanning the room for her usual spot. But today, her gaze flickered involuntarily to the far corner of the gym. There he was Romeo. His dark hair was tousled, his toned body flexing as he finished his set, beads of sweat tracing the contours of his muscles. He caught her gaze, offering a small, confident smile.
It all started a week ago, when she found herself crossing paths with Romeo at the gym. He was hard to miss tall, with dark, piercing eyes and an aura of quiet confidence. He was always there, either working out with intense focus or casually greeting people, his charm undeniable. And for reasons she couldn’t explain, it bothered her.
She’d noticed him for the first time when she’d been struggling with a set of squats. Her legs had started to tremble under the weight, and for a moment, she felt herself losing control. But before she could even think of putting the barbell down, Romeo had appeared beside her, his strong hands steadying the bar.
“You good?” he had asked, his voice deep and calm.
Lena had nodded curtly, frustrated with herself. “I’m fine.”
Since then, he had appeared during almost every one of her workouts. Each time, he offered a quiet word, a casual compliment, or a polite nod, and every time, Lena brushed him off. She didn’t need help, and certainly didn’t want his attention.
But today was different.
She noticed something different. There was a quiet buzz in the air, something almost palpable. She spotted Romeo across the room, as usual, but today, he wasn’t alone. A group of young men and some ladies had gathered around him, all of them laughing, all of them watching him. His charm was undeniable, and for a split second, Lena felt a pang of jealousy.
She shook her head, angry at herself for even thinking that way. She wasn’t going to let him get to her. But that was easier said than done.
Romeo’s eyes landed on her, and as if on cue, the crowd around him parted. It was like he could feel her watching him. He smiled one of those slow, almost predatory grins. Lena quickly turned away, her heart racing. She hated the way he made her feel so exposed, so vulnerable.
But she wasn’t the type of person to back down. Not now. Not when she had so much to lose.

The next day, she was out for a jog in the park, the cool evening air helping clear her head. She needed a break from the gym from him too, but she couldn’t stay away for too long. Her routine had become a sort of addiction, a way to cope with the stress of everything else.
As she rounded a corner, she almost collided with someone. She stopped abruptly, her breath catching in her throat.
It was Romeo. Again.
“You’re everywhere,” she muttered, annoyed at the timing. He had a knack for showing up when she least expected it.
He gave her a sheepish smile. “Guess I’m just lucky,” he replied.
Lena was about to dismiss him, to remind him again that she didn’t need his help or his company, but something in his eyes stopped her. For the first time, she saw something softer in him a genuine interest, not just a flirtation.
“Look,” she said, feeling a little out of her depth, “I don’t usually do this. But… why don’t you give me your number? I’ll think about it.”
Romeo’s smile widened. “That’s all I’m asking for.”
He took out his phone and handed it to her, and Lena entered her number with an awkwardness that only seemed to make him smile more.
“Let me know,” he said, tapping the phone once she gave it back. “I’ll be here… if you need me.”
Lena wasn’t sure what had just happened. She had agreed to something she hadn’t wanted, and she couldn’t quite tell if it was a mistake.
But as she walked away, her phone buzzed with a new message.
Unknown Number: Don’t keep me waiting.
She scoffed, saved the number and shoved the phone back into her pocket, but a small part of her one that she couldn’t ignore wondered if he was right.
The following weekend, Lena’s friends convinced her to go out. “You need to relax, Lena,” they’d said. “Come on, we’ll go have some fun. Just one night.” Remember you promised to Join us this weekend Cassie added…. Yes that’s true common now … Rita chipped in.
Lena had reluctantly agreed, and before she knew it, they were at a bar downtown, laughing, talking, and drinking.
Lena tried to let go, tried to have a good time, but something kept gnawing at her. Every time her phone buzzed, her heart would jump.
But then, her phone buzzed again. She glanced at the screen, her stomach sinking. It was a message from her mother.
“We’ve made arrangements for your fiancé. His flight is booked. He’ll be arriving soon.”
Her heart dropped. She quickly shoved the phone back into her bag, trying to block out the cold rush of panic creeping over her. She needed air.
Before she could stand, she almost tripped, her friends who were slightly tipsy from the alcohol, snatched her phone away. “We’re calling someone to help you get home, Lena,” they said, giggling. “You’re not going home like this alone.”
Lena tried to protest, but before she could say anything, they had already picked a number and dialed and placed the phone to her ears .
A voice on the other end answered quickly. “Hello?”
Lena’s friends exchanged surprised glances. “We need help. Our friend’s a bit too drunk to go home. Can you pick her up?”
The man on the phone was fast. Where are you guys? We are close to Fetty Estate, the bar opposite it. Ok just give me few minutes…. He hung up. Within minutes, he arrived at the bar, a sleek black car pulling up in front. When Lena’s friends helped her into the car, she barely registered anything, her mind spinning from the message her mother sent.
The ride to her apartment was quiet, but when they arrived, Lena couldn’t find her keys. Her frustration mounted.
“I can’t find my keys,” she muttered under her breath, her head spinning from the alcohol.
Romeo, who had driven her here, looked at her with a soft expression. “No worries. You can stay at my place for the night.”
Lena hesitated. She couldn’t accept his offer. But she was too tired, too frustrated to argue.
When they got to his place, Romeo helped her inside. He led her to the couch, where she sat, her head heavy. He offered her a shower to freshen up, she reluctantly agreed.
When she emerged from the bathroom, and stepped into the living room, she froze. Kian was standing there, his back to her, seemingly focused on something else. But Lena couldn’t shake the feeling that he had noticed her the way his body tensed when she moved.
As she looked at him, the attraction she had been trying to deny surged again. She pushed it down, but the connection between them felt undeniable.

Romeo turned around, their eyes locked. She could feel her heart racing in her chest, her body betraying her.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly, his voice full of concern.
Lena swallowed hard, unsure of how to answer. The space between them seemed to shrink, the air thick with unspoken tension.
“Yeah, just… tired,” she managed to say, her voice shaky.
But deep down, she knew something was shifting between them. And it scared her.
