Chapter 5

Sienna woke up in a strange bed. The air smelled of cedar, the scent that always clung to Griffin. She found herself wearing pajamas, the diary still clutched in her arms. Griffin walked in. His expression was complicated as he looked at the diary in her arms. "What on earth is going on?" Before he finished speaking, Vivian rushed in crying and threw herself into his arms. "Griffin, don't blame her. I asked her to come get the documents, but she went into the basement. I thought she was a corporate spy. In a panic, I locked the door. I didn't know she had that condition..." She performed with great emotion, tears falling on cue. In the past, Griffin would have already pulled her into his arms to comfort her. But this time, he just looked at her quietly, his eyes cold. "I don't have a meeting tonight." Griffin's voice was icy. One sentence pierced through Vivian's lie. "The butler called me. He said you arrived at the villa in the afternoon and were sneaking around the basement door." Vivian's crying stopped abruptly. The color drained from her face at a visible speed. "Griffin... I... I just..." She tried to charm her way out of it. But Griffin simply pushed her away gently. His gaze returned to Sienna, as if trying to solve a mystery. "Who exactly are you?" He suddenly leaned forward and grabbed her wrist. His attention was drawn to an old scar. The scar was about three centimeters long, shallow and faded. Seven years ago, when they were making a woodworking model together, he had made a mistake. The carving knife in his hand had accidentally cut her. Griffin instinctively reached out his thumb and gently rubbed the long-healed scar. A faint but sharp sting shot through his head, like an electric current. His body went rigid. His pupils dilated. Deep in his mind, something locked away seemed to be violently battering against its chains. He looked at her. His lips moved. A faint syllable almost escaped. "Sienna..." This was it. Sienna's heart leaped to her throat. She knew this was the perfect moment. "Griffin..." Ah! A piercing scream, followed by the heavy thud of something tumbling down the stairs, came from the staircase. Vivian had rolled down the stairs on her own. Griffin snapped back. Seven years of responsibility kicked in like instinct. He let go of Sienna's hand without a second thought and rushed out. "Sienna." He ran to the staircase. Vivian lay on the carpet at the bottom like a broken doll. Her forehead was cut and bleeding. The sight was horrifying. "Call an ambulance," he shouted. He rushed down the stairs and carefully cradled Vivian in his arms. Sienna stood at the doorway of the second-floor room, watching the scene below. The tiny, fragile flame of hope she had just reignited was instantly drenched by a bucket of ice water, from head to toe. Vivian had won again. By hurting herself. Griffin ran past Sienna, cradling Vivian in his arms. He never looked at her again.
