*Ding Dong *
Kayla woke up with a start at the ring of the doorbell.
“Who the hell is it?" She muttered, sprinting downstairs to check it out.
*Ding Dong*
“I'm coming already!" she grumbled in dissatisfaction.
'If it's Zed, he's so gonna get it.’
She opened the door revealing a familiar oval-shaped face and her gaze turned cold.
“What.. are you doing here?"
“Hi, I heard you were back so I thought to drop by.. cousin." said the person at the door.
" You dare call me that traitor?” Kayla's gaze turned colder as she examined the familiar face with brownish gold hair, green eyes radiating fragility at the same time, seductiveness. The one person she loathed and despised with every fiber of her being.
“Brittney, you have thirty seconds to leave this property or are you planning to sell it too because apart from cheating with people's boyfriends, you're into sales of properties.” Kayla muttered.
" Aww..are you still mad about that? Ralph made his.."
“Ten seconds..”Kayla cut in " Leave quickly before I beat you up again.”
Brittney became flustered. " You.. that's all you know. I only came here to welcome you back and you're being mean.”
" Drop the act, Britt. There's no male around for you to deceive.” Kayla withdrew her stern expression. She was quite tired of talking to Brittney as she knew she was just here to talk nonsense and incense her.
“You're boring cousin." Brittney dropped all pretenses and said playfully.
" Oh, Zed isn't around? What a pity!" She strained her neck to take a look inside.
" Take your slutty face out of here and stay away from Zed. Keep out of my family!” Kayla's gaze became ferocious as if about to pounce on her any minute.
“Time's up.. f**k off bitch." She slammed the door on Brittney's face.
“ b***h!” Kayla muttered as she unclenched her already bloodied palm. It took a whole new level of self-control to not dig her fists on Brittney's face.
That rainy night replayed in her head over and over. “She just had to ruin my day huh?" She waved her hand, accidentally pushing off a vase that she caught at the last minute.
“Phew! Gosh, she really pissed me off..hmm?" She spotted a piece of paper that was previously underneath the vase. She took it and read the contents, then her eyes widened.
“Shit.."
** ROSETTA'S EATERY **
" That's the whole story.” Rose sighed as she finished explaining the contents of the paper to Kayla. Her hazel green eyes revealing fatigue. She was tired
No matter how she hid it, her eyes gave it away.
“You should've told me earlier Mom.” Kayla put Rose's hands in her palms. “Don't worry anymore though, I will look for a job here.”
" According to your tale the other day, you have zero chance of continuing bodyguard duty.” Rose sighed.
“That's not the only thing I'm good at.. well it is my specialty but I'll look for something. You've got customers to attend to, I'll see you later..bye!” Kayla rushed out without letting her mother say another word.
“This child of mine.."
—————————
" Sorry Miss, we're overstaffed as it is.”
" It's okay, thanks anyways.”
_Thanks for nothing._
" f**k!”
Kayla was frustrated. She had been to several places in search of a job–restaurants, hotels, companies, even gyms. It was either they were overstaffed or the red stain on her paperwork ruining everything.
The company she applied to as a security guard straight up dismissed her because she was the 'weaker s*x'. In this modern day and age? She knocked him out cold. Served the snobbish motherfucker right!
_I’ll just try again tomorrow._
The time was about 6:45 so she decided to stop the hunt for the day.
Riding through the streets, Kayla's mind was occupied with thoughts. She probably ran a few red lights with the speed she was on.
_Urgh..I need a drink._
She said in her thoughts before taking a sharp turn.
BAM!
She bumped into a weirdly parked car. The rebound from it made her bike twist at an angle before crashing at the roadside. As for Kayla, she was on the hood of the car. Her reflexes were top-notch thanks to her line of work.
“f**k!" She grunted as she slowly got off the hood. She had a small cut on her wrist, courtesy of the windshield, and a few superficial wounds at other places.
“Hey! What did you just do?" a voice called out. Someone was inside! Meaning, the car wasn't wrongly parked or something, but was about to be driven out.
So this minor accident was Kayla's fault for not paying attention but will she admit it?
“You just scrapped my bike, you i***t!"
_Nope! She didn't admit anything._
Then a figure emerged and stood in front of Kayla glaring daggers at her.
“What.. did you just say?"
Kayla made to retort but when she looked up at the face, she almost gaped. The man before her was so… handsome. Although it was almost dark, she could still make out his inky dark hair that looked like it was combed by his fingers and swept back away from his face. His eyes, black? She couldn't make that out.
“You heard me." She pulled herself from staring at him. " How are you to compensate me huh?"
“Hmm?" The man however was surprised by her fearlessness and running mouth.
“Look here.."
“Well, what do we have here?"
Amid their argument, some uninvited guests showed up. Five thugs in T-shirts with one donning a denim jacket.
“ Sorry to interrupt, we were just passing by and heard some noises so we brothers came to see what's going on.”
“f**k off!" Kayla and the handsome man yelled in unison.
" The hell! Get 'em boys" the denim jacket man ordered an attack.
Kayla had been holding in her anger for a while now but she finally found where to vent. Pity, if they knew they would have retreated when they had the chance.
“ Ughh.." one of the thugs knelt, holding his throat. Kayla had thrown something on his throat.
“You.." the handsome man was double enraged, it was his side mirror Kayla had thrown at the thug. He channeled his anger on the two thugs by his side.
Kayla punched one in the guts and ended it with a right hook–a clean knockout.
She wasn't done yet, she rushed up to the denim jacket man. He threw a sloppy punch which she ducked with ease before punching him in the face. He staggered, his stamina seemed better than the others. He threw another punch, a heavy one this time which Kayla blocked with both hands.
She endured the pain pushed upwards from her half-squat position and landed a mighty kick on his groin making him groan and yell in agony before giving him a proper 'education’ as his friends.
Minutes after, Kayla clapped her hands as if dusting dirt off her hands. The anger in her eyes slowly dissipated being replaced with a satisfied expression.
“Ahem."
The handsome man coughed to get her attention. She turned and was about to say something when a police siren wailed nearby. Kayla hurriedly left the place even leaving her motorbike behind.
“A hooligan, interesting.." the handsome man muttered.
“Phew..” Kayla crashed on her bed after sprinting home from the scene but...
“My bike!" She pouted. “That stupid bastard! If it weren't for him..he kind of looked familiar..odd.”
The next day, Kayla went on a job hunt.. again and it was the same as yesterday, a bit worse even. At least, she had a motorbike yesterday.
“Can today get any worse?" Kayla muttered, walking down the street.
" Maybe."
“Huh? Who said that.."
A head poked out from a car parked beside her. A handsome face with familiar black hair and equally dark eyes.
“It's you!"
“Get in." the handsome man said.
" You owe me for my bike. Did you stop me to compensate?" she started shooting bullets with her mouth as soon as she sat down.
“ You are a hooligan. You know you damaged my car yesterday.” he said cooly.
“Look man.."
“Never mind." the handsome man cut in. “You were impressive yesterday, a bit extreme but impressive nonetheless.”
" So you stopped me because..”
" I need someone as skillful as you." He interjected again. " Pardon me, the name is Teddy, Teddy Walker." he smiled.
" No wonder you looked familiar! So you're the lecherous bastard I saw on TV the other day...Tsk. I'm not interested in being your next conquest, excuse me.” She made to leave.
" A hundred thousand dollars per month." Teddy muttered.
“You said what?" Kayla sat back down.
" I need a bodyguard and fate brought me to one yesterday, a beautiful one I might add. Yes, the pay is a hundred thousand dollars per month. Are you interested?” he grinned
Kayla was stupefied but managed to regain her composure. " Ahem.. don't I need to sign a contract, you know so you don't go back on your words.” She said with a deadpan expression.
" You aren't fond of men I presume, but my words are gold. You don't need to be official, I find you very rebellious so no need for a uniform. There's just one clause, you will live with me.”
“With you?" Kayla furrowed her brows in contemplation. This guy's reputation, although not bad, he has that aura that attracts women. His chiseled chin, long dark hair, and those eyes.
“I'll be your bodyguard, nothing else."
“ You do not need to worry.. erm?”
" Kayla.”
" I won't force you to do whatever you don't want to... Kayla”
" Alright, we have a deal. I think I prefer you call me Rogue." She drew her hand for a handshake which he reciprocated.
Teddy's black pupils glinted. " Rogue, how fitting.”
