Chapter 3“I can’t,” Ignacio said, staring down at the gun Reed offered him. His nose twitched. It was like the gun was alive, a snake coiled and ready to strike. Ignacio could hear the warning in his head, the faint hiss, the start of a rattle. His hands remained pasted to his sides. “You really do need to get through this training if you want to be a part of the mission,” Reed said. He stood lazily, holding out the pistol as if it weighed nothing at all. “Won’t you be there to protect me?” Ignacio asked, not wanting to admit he was terrified, hoping to keep the focus off his shortcomings.
