CHAPTER 2 – Ava’s POV The clouds grew dark as evening settled in. My room was a hot mess, clothes everywhere, chaos on full display. Lili and I were panicking, trying to find something for me to wear to the party. Of course, she was already sorted out. It’s Lili. “What time is it now?” I asked, my voice shaky. “8:53,” she replied, tossing aside clothes I clearly wouldn’t wear. “Already?!” I yelled. “I don’t think I’m gonna go,” I said, flopping onto my back dramatically. “No. Uh-uh. Introverted, I never belonged, thank God Lilian came along,” she said. “What? What does that even mean?” I asked, confused. “It means you’re getting your ass to that party,” she said, shoving her phone in my face. “Look…9:07.” “Arrgh!” I threw my head back. “I mean, I want to go, but I look like a sack of potatoes in these dresses,” I pouted. “Yes and no,” she said. “Yes, because we can fix that. And no, because you’re dressing for neither the theme nor your body type. You’re a beautiful Black girl with curves that would make any man unleash his demons.” “Oh yeah?” I asked, laughing. Knock knock. “Come in,” I said. Isaac walked in holding a bag of chips. “Hey, sunshine. Oh Lili, you look nice,” he complimented. “Thank you,” she whispered, blushing. “So…” he said, sitting on my bed beside my head. “Why aren’t you dressed yet?” “I don’t know what to wear,” I said, sounding like I was on the verge of tears. “Well, don’t go, simple,” he said, crunching loudly on the chips. “No, no, no. Don’t listen to him,” Lili said, jumping up and digging through my wardrobe. After barely ten seconds; “This!” she yelled like she’d solved world hunger. “This is what you’re wearing.” She held up a short black dress with sheer netting in all the right places—cleavage, arm, waist. “Oh yeah… I bought that on sss because it was on sale. I doubt it’ll fit,” I said, reaching for the chips. Isaac slapped my hand away. “Ouch. Selfish,” I muttered. He mimicked me. “Well, try it on,” Lili said, dragging me into the bathroom. After what felt like forever… “Hurry, Avi! It’s 9:42!” she yelled. I stepped out. “Oh my goodness!” Lili gasped. “Avi, you look so sexy.” “Uh-uh. Nope. Not while I’m still alive,” Isaac said immediately. “What’s wrong with the dress?” Lili snapped. “First, it’s too short. Second, the cleavage” “Ba ba ba bah!” Lili cut him off. Suctioning to clip his big mouth up , demonstrating with her hand “Not another word, mister. I like you, alright, but I can still beat you up if you piss me off. It’s not about the size.” I watched them argue, but I’d already decided. “I’m wearing it,” I said. “Period,” Lili declared proudly. “You know where to find me when you’re ready,” Isaac said before walking out. “Bye-bye,” Lili waved. “Damn, girl. You look drop-dead gorgeous. Roy won’t keep his eyes off you,” she said. “Girl, don’t be pathetic,” I laughed. I styled my boho braids into a ponytail, laid my edges, oiled my skin, slipped into my heels, added lip gloss, and of course, Lili had to add her finishing touches. Perfumes . The room was filled with various fragrance , not aromatic, chockey “Cough cough, cough!” I coughed barely being able to breathe “Oh my days Lili, I’m going to die one day with your ‘cologne of death, why so much?” I coughed “ well… our scent has to go before and after us just like the presence of our lord Jesus Christ…Amen” she said I laughed and we all left the room. We knocked on Isaac’s door. “We’re ready,” Lili said, giggling. “Go wait in the car. I’ll be down in a minute,” he replied firmly. We waited in the car, making t****k until he joined us. The drive was long, silent, and awkward. “Isaac… are you mad because of the way I spoke to you earlier?” Lili finally asked. He pulled over and sighed. “Avi, Lili you’re going to a party full of horny, thirsty teenage boys, and I won’t be there to protect you. All I’m saying is: be careful. Dress smart. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to my sisters.” “What?” Lili gasped. “Sisters? I’m done. Babe, let’s break up.” We all burst out laughing as he drove again. When we arrived, I froze. “Holy.....this is a mansion.” We stepped out. “Call me if you need anything,” Isaac said before driving off.
