Episode 5: The Final Cipher

254 Words
Wind howled outside the ranger station as Sera’s mind raced. Someone was feeding her breadcrumbs—enough to terrify, but not to kill. Not yet. That meant something worse was coming. She grabbed her pack and bolted, but the second she stepped out the door, the sound of rotor blades echoed above. A black, silent drone hovered, scanning. Sera fired a shot at it. Sparks burst, but it stayed aloft—recording. Then her burner phone rang. Blocked ID. She answered. A voice—distorted—spoke calmly: "You were never off the grid. Echo never shut down. You just stopped looking." Click. She ran, ducking through the trees, heading toward the ravine—another exit point Echo had built years ago. As she neared it, she spotted someone standing at the edge. Tall. Face hidden. Holding a USB drive. She stopped. “Viktor?” she whispered. The figure didn’t speak. Instead, he dropped the USB into the water below. Then turned—and shot himself in the head. Sera screamed and ran to the edge. But there was no body. No blood. Nothing. She looked down. Floating just beneath the surface of the dark water was the USB. She dove. When she surfaced, shivering, she held it in her hand. The label read: “AGENT 05. FINAL CIPHER.” Behind her, a second drone whirred to life. And from it, a voice whispered: "You found the last piece, Sera. Now let’s see who comes for you." End of Chapter 5. To be continued…
