Asher couldn't stop looking at her, the way her blond hair hung long over her shoulders, partially covering her breasts. The way her body was shaped, like an hourglass. She seemed tiny as she cowered at a safe distance from him. He didn't like that. He didn't like the space between them. Even though it was just a few feet, it felt like canyons between them. He tried again, taking a step closer, but she backed away, whimpering, "Please don't!" Why the hell was she afraid of him? He couldn't understand. He refused to understand. She was his mate, after all. She should know that he would never harm her. But the fear was evident in her eyes. "Are you looking for—" Her pale green eyes roamed over his face. "—I assume he is your brother. I can lead you to him, but you cannot touch me!" Asher tilted his head to the side, caught between amusement over her comment and a strange uncertainty if she really meant it. All he wanted to do was touch her. Why wouldn't she want that? "Do you understand me?" She stood straighter, her hand reaching for something on her neck, but it seemed to be missing. A necklace, perhaps? It must have torn when she turned. "What's your name?" "My name doesn't matter. You don't need it. I don't need yours." "Asher," he introduced himself anyway, but she just shook her head and started walking away from him. After a few steps, she shifted back into a wolf. A shame, he liked watching her walk in front of him, naked. She certainly had a fine body. The kind that made one think about all the things he could do with it. It would definitely involve touching her. "Did you find my brother?" he asked, and the wolf turned her head to look at him. Of course, she did, but he wanted to talk to her. He didn't like that she took that away from him by changing back into her wolf form. She was a pretty wolf, with very pale fur—somewhere between brown and beige. She wasn't from around here; that much was for sure, and he couldn't help but wonder if she had a pack or not. Was she the rogue they were hunting out here? She didn't seem that ruthless, and if she was, she would have attacked him instead of running away. Was she even aware of the dangers out here? "You shouldn't be out here by yourself. It's dangerous." The wolf snorted, clearly disagreeing. "Where is your pack?" She didn't answer. "Why are you out here? Are you running from someone?" She responded with an annoyed growl. "You're a rogue wolf, aren't you?" She started to trot away from him, but he didn't mind changing and chasing after her. He enjoyed it, and it was no trouble catching up with her much smaller wolf. She snarled at him when he tried to playfully nip her hind leg. He did it again, and this time she lost her footing and fell. He used that opening to pin her down under his massive body. She struggled, kicked, and tried to free herself, but he wouldn't budge. "Tell me who you are!" he used his Alpha voice to get into her head. It would work, even though she wasn't part of his pack or bore his mark. "Tell me, or I'll make you!" Her eyes sparked with fear, but it quickly turned into anger. She lifted her head off the ground and sunk her teeth into his leg. He howled in pain, but she managed to free herself and run off. "You!" he growled and chased after her. She bit him! She actually bit him! This one was going to be a lot of work. He followed her scent to a strangely built cottage. It looked like a toddler had built it and was about to collapse. But her scent was strong, and he knew he would find her inside. And he would find his brother there too. The lucky bastard found her first. They always knew that being twins could mean they shared a mate. Apparently, twins had the same soul, the same essence, so it was very likely that they would also have the same mate. Aiden and Asher had known this day would come. They knew that sharing would come with problems, that it wouldn't be easy. Now that the day had finally arrived, Asher felt a sharp pang of jealousy, knowing that his brother found her first. His mate stood next to a cramped bed in the primitive cottage, her body covered with a dress as she gestured toward the man on the bed. "What happened?" he asked, his feet moving quickly to check on his unconscious brother. His brother was bandaged, and he could sense that he was badly wounded. "I do not know. I found him like this." "You found him?" That was better. But not quite good enough. It was still Aiden who laid eyes on her first. "Can you transport him back to your territory or not?" He lifted his eyes to her, a low growl rumbling through his chest. She might be his mate, but her tone was getting on his nerves, tickling his Alpha pride the wrong way. "I need you to leave!" he warned. "Why? Don't you understand that—" "I understand, and I don't want it!" "You don't—" he stood, his heart pounding faster, "—want us?" "Us?" "Yes. Us. He is my twin brother." "Oh god, no," she groaned and looked down at Aiden. He could have sworn he saw something softening in her features, but it was gone as quickly as it came. "Listen, I don't know what you think this is—" "I know exactly what this is!" he stared at her. "No," she shook her head with a sad expression, "you don't. I am not who you think I am. I can't be, and I refuse to. If you need me to leave this place, fine, I will, but I cannot go with you. I can't be—" "That's not up to you!" he disagreed, visibly agitated. Luna never thought that this would happen to her. She didn't think that she would be chosen to be anyone's mate. It was dangerous—too dangerous—and she hadn't spent most of her life in isolation to suddenly change her mind about that. She needed to stay as far away from them as possible. As much as it pained her, she needed to leave this place and start over somewhere new. "You'll force me to go with you?" she questioned. "Do I have to?" he challenged her. "Probably!" she crossed her arms in front of her chest, defying the Alpha in the room. It may not be the smartest choice, but she didn't have many options. She couldn't go with him under any circumstances. She needed to stay on her own, no matter how tempting it was. It wouldn't bring her lasting happiness. It would only cause trouble and, ultimately, lead to death. One way or another. She wouldn't bear that burden again. She had sworn to herself many years ago and she wasn't about to break that promise because of a man. A handsome, tall, and... nope. She wouldn't do it! Asher stood there at a loss for words. Would he force her to go with them? Yes, he would, but he knew that wasn't the right way to handle this. He just had no idea how to deal with this kind of rejection, especially from his mate—someone who was meant to be with him, made for him. There wasn't a single cell in his body that didn't want her. Staying away wasn't even an option, and he wouldn't let her slip away. He watched as her hand rose to her chest, searching for something again. When her fingers couldn't find it, she rested her hand flat against the upper half of her sternum. "I have to go," she sighed. "I need you to be gone when I get back. I am a rogue wolf, and I have no intention of changing that. I'm sorry. I don't know exactly how this works, but if someone thought it was a good idea to make me your mate, they were wrong. I am not a mate, and I am not meant to be part of a pack. I am better off on my own. The sooner you accept this, the easier it'll be." She moved away from the bed, trying to keep as much distance between them as the cramped cottage allowed. Asher was torn between following her and taking care of his brother. She had patched him up, but he needed medical attention at the hospital, not in this no-man's-land. He would die, and Asher wasn't willing to sacrifice his brother for this. Deep down, he knew he would find her again. He would come back here and get her, and she would come around because there was no running from the mate's bond. She could try to run. She could try to hide. But Asher would find her, even if it was the last thing he'd do. AN// I hope you enjoy the story so far. If you are new to this, I would love to give you a little background information on how my wolves "work". This is only important if you haven't read "Alpha's Pregnant Mate". So, in this world, there is no Moon Goddess who decides who is fated to whom. Right now, you do not know how it works, you only know there is no Goddess. Also, only an Alpha gets a mate. Why? Because they are leaders and it is only important for them to have an unbreakable bond with a mate in order to become true Alphas. What else... the Council is some sort of supernatural government, setting up rules so that all supernatural beings can exist peacefully together. There are witches, vampires, and werewolves (as far as we know). There is also talk about "an ancient one". We do not know who or what he is, but he is the ultimate enemy of the council. Last but not least: We do not trust the Council / The High Court (sometimes I will refer to them as such)! That should be all... everything else you will find out reading "Alpha's Untamed Mate!" Should I have forgotten to mention something, feel free to correct me. =)
