Beginnings

Five days passed before the texts and calls from Amy's family became too much. It was time to bite the bullet and take Kynan to meet her family. Her hands shook as they flashed to the Irish countryside not too far from her parent’s underground home. “It will be fine.” Kynan reassured her as they began walking towards the house. “They might want to kill you.” She said nervously. “Hey, if my mother doesn't want to kill you. Then your family can learn not to kill me.” “Those are two different things, and you know it. My family hates Angels.” “And my mother belongs to a class of Angel that kill demons.” “They are still two separate circumstances. Your mother doesn't hate all of demon kind.” “It will be fine.” They reached the front door which actually looked like a front door because the upper part of the house was a small run-down cottage that now housed chickens. Amy led Kynan inside and down the flight of stairs in the back. Kynan had been expecting a dark damp cave lit with torches but when he saw the interior he froze. The place looked great. It was set up like you'd expect any human home to look like. There were comfy lounge chairs around a large screen TV in the living space. The stone floor was covered in rugs and the walls decorated with art, both human and demon in origin. Kynan could see into the kitchen. It looked modern with a dishwasher and all. There was no fire light, but there were ceiling lights that illuminated the room and all eleven frowning faces of Amy's family. He had seen them all together before but squashed into the living room and glaring like they were, they seemed a lot more scary. Amy's father caught Kynan's attention with his grey skin and purple eyes. He was covered with the swirling grey leopard print but it didn't stand out the way Amy's did. Small horns poked out of his thinning silver hair and it was clear his sons got their size from the werewolf side of the family.   “You son of a b***h!” Sly was the first one to break away and come at Kynan. He threw a punch that caught the angel across the cheek. “Sylvester!” Gina snapped. “Jeez Sly, what did you think they were doing all week?” Lexi laughed as she walked up and hugged her little sister. “congratulations.” She whispered in Amy's ear. “Um, thanks?” Amy was a little disorientated by the mixed welcoming of her family. Her brothers looked like they wanted to kill Kynan, her sisters were hiding smiles, well except Paige who looked like she couldn't care less. Her mother glared disapprovingly at Sylvester and her father, well her father looked a little green. Damon put his hand on Sly's chest and forced his brother to back up from Kynan. “If you hurt her or that kid and I'll gut you.” “What kid?” Amy asked thoroughly confused. “You don't know?” Juliet asked. “How can you not know?” Lexi asked rolling her eyes. Her sister was clueless. “You're pregnant!” Raze called across the room with his usual amount of subtlety. “What?” Amy and Kynan exclaimed together. They exchanged a look of shock. “That's impossible.” Kynan said. “Nephilim are sterile.” “What's a Nephilim?” Raze asked. No one bothered to answer him. “Ree demons have been known to successfully conceive the young of any species. It's possible that you're not sterile but simply needed a more hospitable womb.” Shade offered the information like a scholar before he remembered that the “hospitable womb” was his daughter, and he became nauseous again. Gina, who was the only one incapable of sensing the pregnancy when Amy walked in, became excited. She gathered her daughter up in a crushing hug. “My first grand-baby!” When she finally released Amy, her arms caught hold of Kynan and she hugged him tightly too. “Shade, get the cribs from the basement!” Never mind that the new life was only a few days into its existence and wouldn't need a crib for many months. “I can't tell how many are in there. But I'm pretty sure I can sense an angel like aura.” Lexi told them, squinting at her sisters belly. “With our genes there's likely more than one.” Nancy said from the kitchen where she had disappeared to stir the almost burned soup Shade had started earlier. “Ten kids under five.” Amy answered Kynan's questioning expression. At least that explained how he couldn't tell which order the siblings fell in. Shade blundered back into the room carrying a very dusty bassinet filled with baby bits and pieces. “Dad come on? I'm not giving birth right now?” Amy said, moving over to where her father had dumped the baby stuff. “Dinner's ready!” Nancy called from the kitchen, carrying in a large weird smelling pot. “Bat wing broth is excellent for baby development. I'll have to give you a list of things you should be eating.” Shade said herding his children into the dining room. Gina shoved Kynan along too and he took a seat beside Amy, trying not to think about what he was about to eat. It was so surreal he could barely believe it was real. A mate, a child and a family full of demons. Life was about to get very interesting.
