“Sounds like everyone is lucky to have you around, Mr. McCready.”
“Yeah,” he grunted.
The next few days passed slowly. Alex slept most of the time, Carrie at his side. They didn’t say too much. For one, it hurt to talk – and they needed to talk, so it was best if they waited. Instead, Carrie read him some news, an old book she’d found in the lobby, and they watched a lot of TV. She occasionally would lean over and give him a kiss on the cheek. She’d tell him how good he was doing and how soon he’d be back up helping people.
“Carrie?” he asked on the fourth day after waking up. He felt exhausted: the men had come in to see him for the fourth time in as many days. He hadn’t been able to say much to them but that was alright by them. They’d done most of the talking anyway.
