Trying to change

3 months ago Emily woke up at six in the morning, quickly got up and went to her walk-in closet. She picked up a pair of black sports tights, a red sports bra, put on her red sneakers, tied her long brown hair in a ponytail and walked out of her room. The house was quiet. To her relief, everyone seemed to be sleeping. She had never been a morning person, talking or even looking at people right when she had just woken up wasn't something she could do gracefully. Quickly and softly she left her house to go for a run. Going for a run every morning by the docks was her favorite thing to do, especially in autumn, when she could see the sunrise during her jog. She would take the cold and salty morning breeze over a cup of coffee any time. After running for about 40 minutes, she was home, ready for a well deserved long warm bath, which had become her routine for as long as she can remember. Before the water got cold, she dried herself with a warm and fluffy towel, finished her morning routine that consisted in spreading cream all over her body, 5 facial beauty steps of creams and tonics, and a very simple and light makeup look. Going back into her closet she decided to go with a pair of balk high waisted skinny jeans, a fluffy dark blue sweater tucked in at the front and black ankle boots. By the time she was finished, it was eight in the morning. She could hear the alarms going off in her parents and brother's room. She got out of the house before she could see anyone, and took a taxi to her favorite coffee place for breakfast. While eating she went through some emails and proposals from her little business. At twenty to nine she started to walk to school. It was a beautiful day, cold but sunny, the glominess that follows autumn hadn't made an appearance just yet. It took her ten minutes to reach the school and another five to get to the classroom. She was immediately greeted with silent and side glances when she walked to her table. Emily wasn’t proud of it, but she did a lot of stupid things back in middle school. Last year she had stopped a lot of her usual bullying and slowly got away from the group that she used to hang out with. But her reputation was already set in stone and there wasn't much she could do. She didn't really care as she knew what she had done, and if she could be completely honest, a part of her liked that people didn't approach her. A blond girl, with huge blue eyes, slightly shorter than Emmily, walked towards her fuming, while she was getting comfortable in her seat. Emm! What the hell! What happened to you? You went completely awol during the summer. Emily couldn't stop the disgusted look that she gave the girl. Jenifer was one of the reasons that she decided to stop hanging out with her middle school group. Sorry… Do I know you? Jenifer looked at her confused. What the f**k do you mean? Did you lose your mind over the holiday or something? Emily stood up from her seat, staring daggers at Jenifer, who just realized she had fuked up. You must not known me or you wouldn’t have approached me screaming just minutes before the start of a class. And you must have lost your f*****g mind to even swear at me. Jenifer gulped the dry knot that had formed in her throat. Emm, I’m sorry. You see, I…was just worried about you, you didn't respond to any of our texts or calls. We didn't even see you at some of our parents' parties. Emily chuckled and sat back down. Looking the girl up and now, she noticed the people at the door of the classroom. They had obviously been smarter than Jennifer and decided not to approach her. Get out of my class, you are being a disturbance to everyone. And I’m saying this one last time, do not speak to me, do not look in my direction, do not call or text me. This is to all of you, I’m done with our little group. Your parents… Jenifer couldn’t say the rest of the words, as the murderous stare that Emily was giving her made her shiver. She knew very well what Emily was capable of and the power that she held. Her thoughts were disturbed by the school bell. Out! Jenifer didn't need to be told a second time. Quickly turning on her heels, she ran out of the class, almost colliding with the teacher coming in. The next couple of days went about the same, but Emily couldn’t have been happier. She had barely seen Janifer and her little group, her business was doing incredibly well, and school couldn’t be easier. The only thing giving her a bit of a headache were her parents, since the girls from her old group were all from wealthy families, being friends opened opportunities for her parents to meet and gather new business partners, so they kept naging her to meet the girls. But how could she do it, when, even in high school, they kept up with their stupidity. A month has gone by since the start of school. Emily was sitting at her usual table having breakfast, going over a proposal for a flower shop that was run by a 70-year-old woman. The shop had been open for 50 years, and she had been having problems making a proper income for the past year. Her daughter, afraid of what might happen to her mother and the shop, decided to look for help and stumbled on Emily’s website. Everything was about done when, without warning, her laptop crashed. No. No. No. Please don’t die on me. Emily had no idea what had just happened. She started regretting not reading about computers and their mechanisms before. She started to wonder whether she should get a new laptop after school, or get a book about it and try to fix it herself. Sorry, but I might be able to help you. Besides her stood a guy with a buzzed haircut, a clean and neat short beard. He was wearing a black hoodie, a pair of tight blue jeans and sneakers. From his appearance she could tell that he was young, but definitely older than her. In his hands he had a laptop and a cable. You seemed to be working on something really important before your laptop crashed, and I’m really good with computers. I might be able to help you before you need to leave. Oh, umm… I eat here every day… just like you. That's why I know when you are leaving. The boy stumbled his words as he became aware of how creepy he sounded. Emily couldn't help but chuckle. I know, I saw you too. If you can help me, that would be amazing, but I need to leave in fifteen minutes tops. The guys nodded and sat on the chair in front of her. My name is Emily. Dilon. They shook hands. Dilon would mind that I watch you work. I think I need to learn a bit more about the machine that I’m so dependent on. Dilon smiled and nodded. He connected his laptop to Emily’s and started scanning the laptop for internal issues. Dilon explained that if it was a software issue he would be able to fix it, but if it was the hardware, he wouldn’t be able to do anything for the moment as he didn't have his tools. Fortunately for Emily, it was a software issue and, true to his words, fifteen minutes later the issue was resolved. Thank you so much Dilon. Emily gathered her stuff in her bag. She would have to run to school now. If it’s OK with you, let's have breakfast together tomorrow. I want to learn more about computers so I’m able to fix it myself if something happens again. Ok. No problem with me. Here! Emily extended a 100 in front of him. For your work. You really helped me here. No…no… I’m good, that would be way too much anyway for fifteen minutes of work. And you are a student, you shouldn’t give so much money so easily to people, even if you have it. Emily looked at him funny, and chuckled. She could see that he was being sincere, so she put her money back. She thanked him and, before running back to school, paid for his breakfast at the counter. Her day went as usual, but she felt especially happy, the idea of learning something new was exciting, and the mere perspective that she might finally have a friend in her life made her more happy than she could have permitted herself to say. The next two weeks were the most happy and fulfilling that she had in her life. Now, instead of working on her business, she spent her forty minute breakfast time with Dilon learning about computers. She picked up everything really fast, which made Dilon a bit jealous, but he still taught her as much as he could during the time they had. They end up meeting during the weekend as well, getting close very fast. Emily never had someone she could say, it was her best friend, but Dilon in two weeks, had definitely become like a brother to her. He got to learn about her past and gave her a hard time with it, but immediately took her to ice cream as a reward for leaving the nasty group and changing her ways, like a proper big brother. It was Saturday and she was getting ready to meet Dilon at the usual spot, when her mother burst into her room, with a dress in her hands. Where do you think you are going? It’s 3 you can’t go anywhere, go take a bath. Zoey will be here at 4 to do our hair and makeup. She talked, barely looking at Emily, walking straight to the closet. What do you mean? I wasn't invited to any party today, and I’m certain that I haven’t accepted any invitations. Her mother came out of the closet with the dress and a pair of silver high heels. Do not start with me. It was a family invitation, which I accepted. All of us are going and it’s final. I have prepared you a dress already and these heels will go perfectly with it. I have plans already. I have someone waiting for me. What plans! She looked at Emily, and as if remembering something, she gave her daughter a crooked smile. Oh, you mean the IT kid that you have been meeting recently? Forget about him. If you want a boyfriend, you should find one at the party today. What are you talking about? He is my friend, a brother, and how do you know about him anyway? Friend, lover, either way, you would do much better getting someone from this party, since you decided to stop talking to poor Jenifer, Michele and Kara. If you need someone to teach you about IT, we can hire someone, or buy you all the books that you need. How do you know about him? Emily almost screamed at her mother. The entire situation was starting to piss her off tremendously, she hated the idea of her mother knowing things that she didn't had shared. Why are you talking like that to me? Your brother told me, how else would I know? She looked at her daughter as if her question was absurd. You should behave more like your brother. You know having brains won’t help you in everything, you need to learn how to behave and interact with people as well. Emily chuckled. Like Jenifer and her little entourage? Be very careful with your words. Do you think I don’t know about all the problems that you got yourself involved in, back in middle school? If it wasn’t for the girls, I would have punished you severely. What are you talking about? Don’t try to lie to me now. Your brother told me everything. I don’t even want to hear about it. Go take a bath and get ready. She walked out of the room, leaving Emily dumbfounded. What the f**k was that? Emily started a bath with lavender oil, hoping it would calmer down. Before getting in, she called Dilon to explain her situation, and, as usual, he was super understanding with everything. She stayed in the bath until the water turned cold and the tips of her fingers got wrinkled. She started her little routine as if she was going to school, leaving the make-up for Zoey to do. The full-length dress that her mother had chosen was stunning. Dark blue silk with silver details hung all her curves perfectly. The fabric on the shoulders and back was transparent, showing her skin, but covering her at the same time. Zoey arrived right on time, taking care of Emily first, while her mother hovered around them telling Zoey how to do her job. Forty-five minutes later, she was ready. She stayed in her room reading one of the books that Dilon recommended to her, waiting for her mother to be ready. She knew that her father and brother were ready and waiting in the salon, but she preferred to be by herself. For the party, Emily and her younger brother, Anwir, had to share a ride. She always tried to restrict their interactions to the bare minimum, but her mother's words kept coming to her mind. Did you hire someone to spy on me? Anwir chuckled. What makes you say such words? The fact that you have shared information with our mother that I have never told you. None of them were looking at each other while they were talking. Maybe I’m just a caring brother that takes time to look at his sister. After all, although you have always been book smart, I have always been better at reading people than you. I believe they call it emotional intelligence. He observed his sister's reflection from the window of the car, seeing her holding in a laugh pissed him off. If you say so. Just tell me something. I’m very curious. How are you paying them? She turns to her brother, looking at him probably for the first time in months. Don’t tell me you are… She gasped dramatically. Paying them with your…bo Be very careful with your next words. Or they could do more than just watch you. So you do have someone watching me. She stared at her brother, giving him a small fake smile. Before her brother could say anything, her phone started to ring. When looking at the ID, rage started building up inside of her. She had told them but they didn't listen. She declined the call. I thought you weren’t talking with Kara anymore. Emily didn't answer, as her phone started to ring and Karla’s name popped out on the screen again. Emm, Thank good. I need your help. They are going too far, you need to stop them. Karla screamed from the other side of the phone. You gotta be joking, Karla. Whatever situation all of you are in, I’m certain that you had your part in it. If you got your ass in trouble, then you can get out of it as well. Stop them yourself. Emily turned off the phone, she was furious. The rest of the ride was silent, Emily was trying to calm herself down, while her brother seemed to be in deep thought. At their destination, about twenty photographs surrounded the main door of the hotel where the party was taking place. Her family posed together as the image of the perfect family, while people screamed and blinded them with the flashes of the cameras. After her parents went to mingle with the other adults, Emily walked to the five meter long table that showcased a variety of dishes that were cooked and arranged in such a way that made it impossible for Emily to know what she was eating. Thank you! No one was grabbing anything. I was starting to think that the food was fake. A guy about her age approached her. He looked to be taller than 1.80 meters, with dirty blond hair and green eyes, and a muscular build. Although his presence was intimidating, his smile was enchanting. I know what you mean. And just between us, I am not completely sure if this is actually food. They should start serving proper food at these parties. For example, what is this? Emily pointed at the small shot glasses that held a gray-looking ball with steam coming out of it. I just want to sit down with a good steak and a side of crunchy wedges. I would even promise to eat the side salad. He looked at the food, almost crying. This looks like a crime. Emily chuckled. Well, let’s just be glad we have food to eat. By the way, my name is Emily, and yours? The boy looked straight into her eyes and gave her a small smile. I know who you are. I believe that most people in our school have learnt your name by now. He extended his hand, which she immediately took. Xavier, pleasure to officially meet you. Oh my sister! Don’t tell me you keep getting into trouble even in high school. Anwir came from behind her sister. He had been behind his sister the entire time, watching the entire interaction, and was getting a bit frustrated with being ignored. Xavier, you said, Anwir, pleasure to meet you. They shook their hands. I believe this is the first time I have seen you. Who might your parents be? Emily couldn’t but roll her eyes at her brother. For someone that constantly claims to have a high emotional intelligence IQ, he sure wasn’t reading Xavier properly. Xavier gave a very obvious fake smile to Anwir. My family moved into this city a couple of months ago, that’s why we haven’t met before. Turning back to Emily, he threw his hand on his chest, pretending to be sad. But I have got to say I am a bit disappointed that you haven’t recognised me, Emily. I like to think I’m kind of eye candy, grabbing every girl’s attention just by breathing. Oh, my, I sincerely apologize. Emily says in a mocking tone, making Xavier laugh. But if I remember correctly, you and your twin are from class 10C, and you see, I try my best to keep my distance from your class. Uhm… Jenifer, right? A very obsessive and delusional girl, isn’t she? She has mentioned your name a couple of times. She did what? Her rage came rushing back again. Some people were standing up to her, so she kept threatening them using your name. Emily almost broke the glass in her hand. But for some reason to me, it seemed more of a bark and no bite situation. Well… my dear sister did hurt a lot of people back in her middle school days. Didn't you Emm? Anwir got closer to her, and whispered so she could be the only one to hear. You sure become the monster that I told you were. And now everyone can see it as well. Emm stared at her brother with so much hate that if a look could kill, he would have died 100 times over, but then Kara's call came to her mind. She turned her phone on, and the sound of the message alerts came rushing down and with them her heart rate went up. Looking through the messages, she couldn’t believe it, her body couldn't move, she started ventilating, and her mind started going a mile an hour, making her feel dizzy. *Ring* Please Emily they going to r**e the girl *Ring* Emm I can’t stop them *Ring* Emily please answer *Ring* They kidnaped her, they got people to r**e her. Please Emm I can’t do it. *Ring* Please
