Chapter 1

815 Words
Amara’s POV I hear the sound of voices moving in around me, I can feel the fear, it’s creeping in as the penetrating sound of war keeps coming closer. Even though I don’t recognize the things around me or the feeling of terror I feel as though I know this place, it’s almost as if I’ve been here before. It’s so familiar, almost like a distant memory. I hear footsteps, they’re coming towards me. Should I hide, should I scream? Jack! Take her, she’s not safe here anymore! Wait, that’s my dads name. The woman in front of me screams at him to get a move on. She’s worried about something or someone. Bam! I scream out in horror. “Amara”! I open my eyes to see my dad looking at me with that worried expression he’s always carrying on his face. “Don’t worry dad it was just a dream, at least I think it was. You wouldn’t believe how real it felt”. “Well, as long as you’re ok that’s all I care about. You should come downstairs; breakfast is ready”. He says brushing off what I said. “Ok dad, I’ll be down in a minute” I said as I headed into the bathroom. I looked at my reflection, at my solid black hair and pasty white skin, my green eyes staring back at me and all I could think about was how that woman from my dream looked so identical to me. Why did that dream feel so real and who was that woman I saw? Why did she look so much like me? These were the questions I asked myself as I got into the shower, as I washed my hair and my body, I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe my dad knew of this place in my dreams. I knew how crazy it sounded but nonetheless I decided I would ask him when I got downstairs, after I was finished with my shower I brushed my teeth and headed downstairs to the kitchen where I knew my dad would be waiting for me. “Hey dad, I was just wondering if maybe you might know something about the dreams I’ve been having”, I said with a curious look on my face; genuinely wondering if maybe he knew something. My dad looked at me with what I can only imagine was a look of sadness. “Amara, it was just a dream and besides aren’t you late for school? You should really be going”, he said with almost a bit of shakiness to his voice, I kind of just brushed it off as him being weird and shrugged my shoulders and headed out the door. As I made the walk to school, I couldn’t get the thought out of my head that maybe he was hiding something. I mean growing up I’ve always been different from other kids and I’ve been made to hide this from everyone, but I mean what other kids do you know that can levitate or shapeshift, I mean I don’t ever get hungry or cold. Deep down I think that my dad knows that but he still attempts to make me breakfast or food in general really. Now that I think about it that’s another hint that he might know something, I’ll try to ask him again when I get out of school today. “Girl! There you are. Late again I see”. That would be my best friend Valerie, we met in kindergarten and she’s still just as obnoxious. “Sorry I woke up late again”, I said with a look of disdain on my face. She looks at me and instantly knows that something’s wrong. “What’s wrong”? She asks me worriedly. “Nothing, it’s just the same dream that I’ve been having. I don’t get it and I tried to talk to my dad about it but he just brushes it off”. I say as we arrive at school. She looks at me sympathetically and pats me on the back. “He’s probably just worried about you, that’s all”. She says trying to make me feel better. RIIINNNGGG!!!! The bell sounds letting us know that first period has started. “Shoot! We’re late for first period”, I say annoyed. She laughs at me and says, “what else is knew”? I smile back at her as we make our way to first period. I walk into my first period class and automatically head to the back of the classroom like I always do, I don’t know why but the idea of being in the front row does not sit well with me. I’ve never liked being the center of attention. I kind of stick to myself.
