Chapter Two: Between Life and Loss The rain had not stopped. It battered against the windshield of Liam's car as it sped through the crowded streets toward the hospital. Beside him sat Jules Jordan, clutching her hands together so tightly her knuckles had turned white. Every second felt like a lifetime. "Please drive faster," she whispered. Liam glanced at her. His heart ached at the fear in her eyes. "We'll get there." Jules nodded, but her tears continued to fall. Minutes later, Liam's assistant arrived with the twins. The moment the car stopped in front of the emergency entrance, Jules rushed out. "Jayda!" Her daughter lay limp in the assistant's arms, her tiny face pale and covered in sweat. Meanwhile, Jayden cried uncontrollably. "Mummy, please make her wake up!" Jules felt her knees weaken. "No, baby. She'll be okay." But she wasn't sure. Not anymore. The hospital staff quickly wheeled Jayda into the emergency room. A nurse stopped Jules at the door. "You can't go in." "My daughter is in there!" "Please wait outside." Jules watched helplessly as the doors closed. Then silence. A horrible silence. Jayden buried his face in her stomach. "Mummy, is my sister dying?" The question shattered her. She dropped to her knees and hugged him tightly. "No." But her voice lacked confidence. "Your sister is strong." Jayden looked up. "Like you?" Fresh tears rolled down Jules' face. She kissed his forehead. "Yes." Liam stood nearby, watching. He had witnessed business failures. Court battles. Financial disasters. But nothing compared to watching a mother try to be brave while her world collapsed around her. An hour passed. Then another. Every minute felt cruel. Finally, a doctor emerged. Jules jumped to her feet. "Doctor?" His expression was serious. "We've stabilized her for now." Jules nearly collapsed with relief. "For now?" The doctor sighed. "Your daughter has a severe infection. She should have been brought in much earlier." The words struck like a knife. Jules lowered her head. She knew. She had seen the signs. But medicine cost money. Hospitals cost money. Everything cost money. Things she didn't have. The doctor continued. "We need to run more tests immediately." "Do whatever you need." The doctor hesitated. "The tests and treatment will cost approximately two million naira." The hallway became silent. Jules stared at him. The number felt impossible. Two million. She didn't even have two thousand. Her lips trembled. "I..." She couldn't breathe. "I don't have that kind of money." The doctor nodded sympathetically. "Unfortunately, treatment cannot continue without payment authorization." Jules felt the world spin. No. Not again. Not when help was finally within reach. She grabbed the doctor's arm. "Please." The doctor looked uncomfortable. "I understand, but these are hospital policies." "Please save my daughter." "I'm sorry." The doctor walked away. Jules stood frozen. Then slowly, she sank to the floor. Everything she had fought for. Everything she had sacrificed. It wasn't enough. Her daughter was dying because she was poor. The realization broke something inside her. A sob escaped her lips. Then another. Soon she couldn't stop crying. Jayden watched silently. His little face filled with confusion and fear. "Mummy?" Jules couldn't answer. She felt like she was drowning. Suddenly, a deep voice spoke behind her. "How much?" The nurse looked up. "Excuse me?" Liam stepped forward. "How much does the treatment cost?" The nurse checked the file. "Approximately two million naira, sir." Without hesitation, Liam pulled out his phone. "Prepare every treatment she needs." The nurse blinked. "Sir?" "I said prepare everything." Jules stared at him. "What are you doing?" Liam looked at her. "Saving your daughter." "No." She immediately shook her head. "I can't let you do that." "Why?" "Because I can't repay you." Liam knelt in front of her. For a moment, neither spoke. Then he gently said, "Jules." Her eyes met his. "I didn't help you because I wanted repayment." Her tears flowed harder. "Then why?" Liam glanced toward the emergency room where Jayda was fighting for her life. Then back at the exhausted woman before him. The woman whose pain had somehow reached places inside him he didn't know existed. "Because no child deserves to suffer." Jules covered her mouth. Years of struggle. Years of loneliness. Years of carrying everything alone. And now a stranger was standing beside her when everyone else had turned away. She couldn't understand it. Yet she was grateful beyond words. Moments later, the hospital staff rushed into action. Doctors. Nurses. Specialists. Everyone moving quickly. Because now payment was no longer a problem. Hours later, near midnight, the doctor returned. This time, he was smiling. "The treatment is working." Jules burst into tears again. But these were different tears. Tears of relief. Tears of hope. For the first time that day, she could breathe. Jayden jumped excitedly. "My sister is okay?" The doctor chuckled. "She's a fighter." Jayden smiled for the first time all night. Liam watched from a distance. Something warm settled inside his chest. A feeling he had never experienced before. As Jules hugged her son, thanking God through her tears, Liam found himself unable to look away. And though neither of them realized it yet, this night had already begun changing more than Jayda's fate. It was quietly changing their hearts as well
