Chapter Eight: Lines Drawn in the Rain The rain fell harder. The streetlights cast golden reflections across the wet pavement. For a long moment, nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Lorenzo stood beside the black car. Liam stood in front of Jules' apartment. And Jules felt trapped in the middle of a battle she never asked for. The twins peeked from behind her. Curious. Confused. Unaware of the tension hanging in the air. Lorenzo's eyes moved past Liam and landed on the children. Something unreadable flashed across his face. Then it disappeared. "Liam." His voice was calm. Too calm. "Get in the car." Liam didn't move. "No." The answer echoed through the quiet street. Jules felt her stomach tighten. Lorenzo's jaw clenched. "You embarrassed an important family tonight." "I didn't ask for that dinner." "You knew why it was arranged." "I don't care." The words hung heavily between them. For the first time, Jules saw genuine anger in Lorenzo's eyes. Not disappointment. Not frustration. Anger. The kind that came from losing control. Aurora had been chosen for Liam. The perfect match. The perfect future. And Liam had walked away from it. Lorenzo stepped closer. "This isn't just about you." "Then stop pretending it is." Rain dripped from Liam's hair as he faced his father. Neither man backed down. Neither blinked. Neither surrendered. Jules had never seen anything like it. It wasn't merely an argument. It was years of unspoken resentment finally rising to the surface. Then Lorenzo looked directly at her. "May I speak with you privately, Ms. Jordan?" Her heart nearly stopped. Liam immediately shook his head. "No." Lorenzo ignored him. Jules hesitated. Every instinct told her to refuse. Yet another part of her wanted answers. After a moment, she nodded. "Five minutes." Liam looked ready to protest. But Jules gave him a small reassuring smile. Reluctantly, he stepped back. --- A few moments later, Jules and Lorenzo stood beneath a nearby awning. The rain created a curtain around them. For several seconds, Lorenzo remained silent. Then he surprised her. "You love your children." It wasn't a question. Jules frowned. "Of course I do." "I can see that." His voice was quieter than before. Less intimidating. Almost human. "I had investigators follow you." Jules stiffened. "You what?" "I needed to know who you were." Her anger flared instantly. "That's insane." "Perhaps." He didn't deny it. Which somehow made it worse. Lorenzo looked out at the rain. "They reported everything." Jules folded her arms. "I'm not sure whether to be angry or terrified." "Probably both." For the first time, a faint smile touched his lips. Then it vanished. "I know how hard you work." Jules blinked. "I know about the hospital." Silence. "I know about the nights you skipped meals so your children could eat." Her throat tightened. "I know about the bills." She looked away. Ashamed. Embarrassed. Exposed. But Lorenzo's next words shocked her. "You remind me of someone." Jules looked back. "Who?" "My wife." The answer stunned her. Lorenzo rarely spoke about Liam's mother. Even Liam had mentioned that. For a moment, sadness appeared in his eyes. Deep. Old. Painful. "When I met her, she had nothing." Jules listened quietly. "Everyone told me she wasn't suitable." A bitter laugh escaped him. "They said she would ruin my future." The irony hit both of them immediately. Jules stared. "You sound exactly like those people." Lorenzo's face hardened. "Perhaps I do." The admission caught her off guard. Then he sighed. For the first time, he looked tired. Not powerful. Not wealthy. Just tired. "The difference is that I know what this world does to people." "What does that mean?" "It means love is not enough." His voice carried the weight of experience. "Love doesn't protect people from public scrutiny." He stepped closer. "Love doesn't shield children from cruelty." Jules immediately thought of the twins. The knot in her chest returned. Lorenzo noticed. "Exactly." His voice softened. "If Liam chooses you, your life changes forever." The words felt less like a threat now. More like a warning. "Reporters will come." Jules swallowed. "People will judge you." She already knew they would. "They'll judge your children." That one hurt. A lot. Because he was right. People could be cruel. Especially to innocent children. Lorenzo reached into his coat. Then handed her a card. A business card. Jules frowned. "What is this?" "A choice." Her confusion deepened. "If you decide to leave this city, call that number." She stared at him. "What?" "I'll arrange everything." The world seemed to stop. "You're offering me money to disappear?" Lorenzo said nothing. And silence was answer enough. Anger exploded inside her. Before she could think twice, she shoved the card back into his chest. "No." Lorenzo blinked. Jules stepped forward. Furious. "I have spent years fighting for my children." Her voice trembled. Not from fear. From rage. "You think I can be bought?" "That wasn't—" "Don't." Tears filled her eyes. "Don't insult me like that." For the first time since meeting her, Lorenzo looked genuinely surprised. As though nobody had spoken to him that way in years. Maybe nobody had. Jules took a deep breath. "If Liam walks away from me, that is his choice." Her voice steadied. "But I will not walk away because someone richer than me decided I should." Silence. Rain poured around them. Then Lorenzo slowly nodded. Not approval. Respect. The kind earned, not given. "You truly are stubborn." Despite everything, Jules laughed. "So I've been told." --- When they returned to the apartment entrance, Liam immediately stood. "What happened?" Jules smiled faintly. "Nothing." Lorenzo looked at his son. Then at Jules. Then at the twins peeking through the doorway. Something shifted in his expression. Not acceptance. Not yet. But something. Without another word, he turned and walked back to his car. Liam stared after him. Confused. "What did he say?" Jules shook her head. "Another day." The car disappeared into the rain. And for the first time in weeks, silence returned. Then Liam looked at her. His eyes serious. Determined. Certain. "Jules." Her heart skipped. "Yes?" He took a breath. A deep one. As though standing at the edge of a cliff. Ready to jump. Ready to risk everything. Then he said the words neither of them could take back. "I think I'm in love with you." The world stopped. And inside the apartment, two little eavesdroppers nearly screamed with excitement.
