Chapter 2

When I arrived, there was no one outside to meet me. I waited by the entrance for 30 minutes, chilled to the bone, before finally taking out my phone and calling the center. "Ma'am, your husband canceled your reservation 30 minutes ago." My fingers tightened around the phone. The comments suddenly appeared again. A: [She looks so pitiful, standing out in the cold for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, he's buying the other woman a pile of designer stuff to cheer her up.] B: [She's about to bring the heroine some cheap, overpowering home fragrance. It's laced with a slow-acting poison. Once she breathes it in every day, the baby ends up with brain damage.] My hand shook as I hung up. A car pulled up in front of me the next moment. I looked up to see Derek and Sabrina. She stood behind him with red eyes, clearly fresh from crying. Shopping bags of every size filled the car behind them. I couldn't read the look in Derek's eyes. "Monica, apologize to Sabrina." "Why should I?" "Because she's spent more than 6 months taking care of you. She's kind, she never asks for anything in return, and this is how you treat her." I clenched the handle of my suitcase, then raised my hand and slapped him hard. He stared at me in disbelief. I gave a cold laugh. I had stood by Derek when he had nothing and stayed until he finally had some money. I had been there for Sabrina after her parents abandoned her. My family had put her through college. What had I done wrong? My husband had cheated with my best friend, and my best friend had stolen my husband. Sabrina stepped forward, choking back tears. "Monica, it really hurt that you didn't trust me today." She sniffled. "But it's okay. You're pregnant, so what you want comes first. I bought you some home fragrance. Put it in your bedroom and use it every day. It'll help you feel better." She pushed it into my hands. I stood still for a few seconds, then hurled it to the ground. Looking at Derek, I said coldly, "Then let's get divorced." He frowned, impatience creeping into his voice. "Can you stop making a scene? Just apologize to Sabrina and we can forget about this. She even bought you a gift. Why can't you be as considerate as she is? You're 5 months pregnant. Who's going to want you if you leave?" Sabrina came closer. Still looking tearful, she picked up the fragrance and tried to press it into my hands again. "Monica, I'll forgive you if you take it. You have to keep it in your bedroom. I looked it up. It's good for the baby." I backed away, but she suddenly grabbed my hand. I instinctively shoved her. As she screamed, Derek shoved me hard in return. Pain shot through my belly. I doubled over and clutched my stomach. When I looked up, Derek had rushed to Sabrina and gathered her into his arms, his face full of concern. She was on the ground, curled against him, with tears streaming down her face. My face went white. I could barely get the words out. "Derek, my stomach... It hurts." He stiffened, then abruptly let go of Sabrina and reached for me. "I'll call an ambulance. Just stay calm." His hands shook badly as he made the call. The aching pressure low in my belly grew worse. Cold sweat poured down my face and soaked the back of my clothes. When I woke again, I was in the hospital. Derek was sitting beside me, his hand sweaty as he held mine. His eyes lit up when he saw that I was awake. "Monica, you're awake. Thank God the baby's okay. But the baby isn't out of danger yet. Sabrina didn't want your mother to worry. She's on her way to pick her up now." Before I could speak, the comments sprang to life. A: [Her mom dies in a car accident on the way to see her. I don't know if it's this trip, but it's so sad.] B: [After her mom dies, she gives birth to a sick baby who gets sent away. She's got it so rough.]
