Chapter 5: The Hidden Boss

1496 Words
The executive floor of Apex Heights Holdings was unlike anything Theo had ever imagined. The elevator doors slid open smoothly.A quiet hallway stretched before him.The floor was covered with soft charcoal-gray carpet.Crystal lights illuminated the ceiling with a warm glow.Floor-to-ceiling glass walls revealed a breathtaking view of the city skyline.Everything radiated luxury.Everything radiated power. Theo stood motionless for a moment. His delivery bag still hung over one shoulder. His worn clothes looked completely out of place in surroundings designed for billionaires and corporate elites. Chairman Obunga smiled."Quite different from your delivery routes, isn't it sir ?"Theo laughed softly."That's an understatement."The older man gestured ahead."Come. There is much for you to see." Several executives waiting nearby immediately straightened. The moment Theo approached, they bowed respectfully."Good afternoon, Chairman."The title still felt strange.Theo nodded awkwardly. He had spent years being ignored.Years being treated like he was invisible. Now powerful people lowered their heads whenever he walked by.The change was almost impossible to process. As they moved through the executive corridor, employees discreetly stepped aside.Nobody dared block their path.Nobody dared stare too long. The atmosphere felt completely different from the world Theo knew.Obunga pushed open a pair of massive wooden doors."This is your office."Theo entered. Then stopped breathing. The office was enormous. The space alone was larger than the apartment he had rented for years. Dark walnut bookshelves lined the walls.Elegant artwork decorated the room.A private meeting area occupied one corner. The massive desk near the panoramic windows looked like something from a movie.Behind it, the city spread endlessly toward the horizon.Theo slowly approached the glass. The streets below looked tiny.People appeared like moving dots.Cars looked like toys. For the first time in his life, he was looking down from the very top.Not physically, but socially, financially and Powerfully. The realization unsettled him. Obunga observed quietly."How do you feel sir do you need any changes?"Theo considered the question."Honestly?""Of course."Theo exhaled."I feel like am in fantasy world."Obunga laughed,Not mockingly but Genuinely."Good."Theo looked surprised. The older man nodded."A foolish man becomes excited by power." He walked toward the window."A wise man understands its weight."Theo remained silent. The words felt meaningful.Because despite everything that had happened, he wasn't excited. He was just overwhelmed. Thousands of employees worked under Apex Heights Holdings.Families depended on the company.Businesses depended on the company.Entire industries depended on the company. The responsibility was enormous.Obunga placed a hand on his shoulder."That's why your Mr silver chose you."Theo frowned slightly."Because I'm afraid?" "Because you care."The older man's eyes softened."Those who seek power rarely deserve it."For several moments neither spoke. The city stretched endlessly beyond the glass. Then Obunga straightened."Enough philosophy."A grin appeared."Let's continue the tour." The next several hours passed in a blur.Theo saw parts of Apex Heights most employees would never access.Private executive conference rooms,Luxury lounges,Corporate strategy centers.Exclusive dining areas reserved for top executives.Every floor revealed something more impressive than the last. One private restaurant occupied the entire upper level of a tower section.Professional chefs prepared meals for senior management. The dining area overlooked the city through enormous glass walls.Theo stared in disbelief."People eat here every day?"Obunga chuckled."Some people become spoiled by success."Theo shook his head. He couldn't imagine ever becoming accustomed to such luxury. The tour continued.A secure elevator carried them higher.Eventually they arrived at the VIP level.Security here was noticeably tighter.Fingerprint scanners protected every entrance. Private assistants moved quietly through the corridors.Executives conducted confidential meetings behind soundproof doors.Everything felt important.Everything felt expensive.Theo found himself wondering how much money had been spent building the place. Then he realized something. He technically owned it.The thought nearly made him laugh and want to jump high . Only a week ago he had been counting coins to buy dinner. Now he owned an empire.Life was absurd. The final stop left him speechless. The rooftop.Strong winds greeted them as they stepped outside. The city stretched endlessly beneath a bright afternoon sky. Near the center of the rooftop sat a large helipad.A sleek corporate helicopter rested nearby.Theo stared at it."You're joking."Obunga smiled."No." Theo looked between the helicopter and the chairman "People actually use this?""Frequently."The older man looked amused.Theo walked around the aircraft slowly. He had spent years riding an old delivery bike through traffic. Now he was standing beside a helicopter owned by his company. The contrast was almost ridiculous. The wind tugged at his clothes. For a brief moment he allowed himself to enjoy the view. The city looked beautiful from above.Beautiful and fragile.Everyone below was fighting their own battles, working, dreaming, surving just the way he always did, Perhaps that was why wealth felt so strange. His bank account had changed. But inside, he was still Theo.Still the orphan who worked part-time jobs.Still the young man whose heart had been shattered by Naomi.Still the delivery rider struggling through rainstorms and sleepless nights.Money couldn't erase those experiences. And strangely...He didn't want it to. Hours later, they returned to the executive office.Several assistants entered carrying sleek black cases.Obunga sat comfortably."The final matter."Theo raised an eyebrow."What matter?"One assistant opened a case.Inside sat a collection of keys.Another case contained multiple access cards.A third contained an expensive smartphone. Theo blinked."What is all this?"Obunga smiled."Your new life."The assistants carefully presented each item."The keys belong to your apartment."Theo accepted them slowly."Apartment?""A penthouse."Theo nearly choked. The assistants continued."The phone contains secure executive communication systems."Another card was presented."Unlimited access throughout company facilities."Then another."Corporate transportation privileges." Theo rubbed his forehead.Everything was happening too quickly.Far too quickly. The phone alone probably cost more than his monthly salary.Yet nobody here considered it unusual.Obunga leaned back."There's one more thing." Theo suddenly became suspicious."That sounds dangerous."The older man laughed."Bodyguards."Theo immediately shook his head."No."Obunga sighed."I knew you'd say that." "The answer is still no.""Chairman—""No."The executives nearby struggled not to smile.Obunga rubbed his temples dramatically."At least consider it."Theo folded his arms."I spent years protecting myself.""That's exactly why you need protection now." Theo remained firm."I want to live normally."The older man stared at him."You own a corporate empire.""I know." ,,,"Nothing about that is normal.",,,,,Theo grinned."Then I'll be the abnormal chairman."The room erupted with laughter.Even Obunga couldn't argue.Eventually he surrendered. "Fine."Victory flashed across Theo's face."But," Obunga added, "security personnel will monitor discreetly."Theo sighed."I expected that.""Good."The discussion ended. As evening approached, Theo finally prepared to leave. One executive escorted him toward the private parking area.Several luxury vehicles waited.Black sedans.Executive SUVs.Sports cars. Each worth more than anything Theo had ever owned. The executive smiled politely."Which vehicle would you prefer, Chairman?" Theo stared. Then pointed toward the exit."My bike." The executive blinked."Your... bike?"Theo nodded."Exactly."Moments later he rode away on his aging delivery motorcycle.Employees watched from nearby windows. The sight was surreal. A billionaire chairman leaving company headquarters on an old delivery bike.Nobody could quite believe it.Meanwhile, inside Apex Heights Holdings, another person couldn't stop thinking about him. Stephanie sat alone in her office. The events from earlier replayed endlessly in her mind.Theo's calm expression. His kindness. His refusal to seek revenge. Most powerful people she knew would have fired her immediately.Instead, he forgave her.The memory made her feel worse. She stood and walked toward the large window. The city lights were beginning to appear.Normally she focused entirely on work, career, performance and promotion,Yet today her thoughts constantly returned to one person. Theo. The mysterious chairman.Nothing about him made sense. He dressed like a poor man.Worked like a poor man.Lived like a poor man,and she had habit to step on the poor like Theo,,,Yet Theo possessed unimaginable wealth. Why? Stephanie found herself wondering what kind of person he truly was.Curiosity slowly became fascination. And fascination slowly became obsession.Elsewhere, Theo arrived at the address listed on his apartment documents. The moment he saw the building, he froze.A towering luxury residence stood before him.Its glass exterior reflected the evening skyline beautifully.Luxury vehicles entered through private gates.Uniformed staff greeted residents politely.Theo checked the address again. Then checked it a third time. The result remained unchanged. This was his building.A doorman approached respectfully."Good evening, Mr. Theo."Theo stared."How do you know my name?"The man smiled."We were informed of your arrival." Mr obunga didn't want same incident to happen again so he hard send photos of Theo and told security officers to be always respectful. Theo followed the guard inside. The lobby looked more like a five-star hotel than a residential building.Marble floors.Luxury furniture.Elegant lighting.Everything felt unreal.A private elevator carried him upward. The doors finally opened onto the top floor. Theo stepped into the penthouse.Silence greeted him. Then awe.the perfume The apartment was stunning.Modern design blended perfectly with warmth and comfort.Large windows revealed the city skyline. The living room alone exceeded the size of his previous apartment.A fully equipped kitchen occupied one side.Several bedrooms extended down a hallway.Everything was designed perfectly. For a long moment, Theo simply stood there.Neither speaking Nor moving.Just absorbing reality. He should have felt triumphant , victorious and happy,,unexpectedly...He felt lonely. The apartment was beautiful. But it was empty. No family. No friends.Nobody to share the moment with. The realization hurt more than he expected. He walked toward the window.Night had fully arrived.Thousands of lights illuminated the city below.Somewhere out there, people were laughing with loved ones.Sharing meals.Creating memories,, eating barbeque. Theo suddenly understood something important.Money could buy comfort, luxury and power,But it couldn't buy genuine human connection. That had to be earned. The thought stayed with him long into the night. As he stood overlooking the city, unaware of the many lives beginning to orbit around him.
