Chapter 4: Unbelievable

623 Words
When Lisa woke up again, she found herself in the hospital. Everything around her was pure white, and she was dressed in a clean hospital gown. A hospital bracelet on her wrist. The single-patient room was empty, with only the wind rustling the curtains through the half-open window. Lisa remembered passing out downstairs, and at that time of day, there shouldn't have been many people on the street. Could it be that James had finally heard her cries and had a change of heart, rushing back to find her? Lisa's heart skipped a beat with hope as she got out of bed and made her way towards the door. However, as she opened it, she collided with a solid figure like a brick wall. "You deceitful b***h! You dared to trick us!" Before Lisa could react, she felt an intense pain in her scalp and was propelled backward, crashing into a cabinet. Blood began to trickle from her forehead. "You slut! Your sister-in-law already told us! James isn't your husband anymore. He wants a divorce, leaving you with nothing! You dare to deceive us? Where's your money? Are you planning to run away? Let me tell you, even if the Green family goes bankrupt, there's no way they'd have nothing. Hand it over quickly, or I'll kill you right now!" The man turned and locked the room door, then grabbed her by the throat, while his other hand held a fruit knife, gesturing menacingly towards her face. Lisa, feigning calmness, said, "Killing me won't get you the money. Besides, James and I haven't divorced yet. Didn't you say I had seven days? I'll find a way to get the money!" "If you can't get the money, I'll burn your brother's coffin, scatter his ashes, and make sure the Green family never finds peace!" "Patient Lisa, are you here?" The hospital room door suddenly swung open, and the man released Lisa, standing up straight. He walked past a white-coated man, their shoulders brushing as they passed. "Why are you sitting on the floor? Was the man who just left your family member?" Lisa forced a bitter smile and stood up. "Ah, yes, he is." "I'm your attending physician, William." The man before her had a slender figure, a handsome face, and wore gold-rimmed glasses. His features seemed vaguely familiar, but she couldn't quite recall who he resembled. Without lifting his head, William replied, "You were brought to the hospital last night with a fever after being caught in the rain. You were unconscious, so I gave you a fever-reducing injection. But the nurse just told me that your temperature hasn't come down yet. I suggest you undergo an examination to determine the cause of the fever so I can prescribe the right treatment." "Okay," Lisa hurriedly agreed. Then, she anxiously asked, "By the way, doctor, do you know who brought me to the hospital yesterday?" "I didn't see anyone. I have no idea," William replied vaguely. He then closed his record book with a loud "snap," glanced at her injuries, and said, "If someone has been abusing you, you can call for help." Lisa paused for a moment, realizing what he meant, her heart feeling bitter. She could only shake her head. "Doctor, can I go home to get some things?" "You can, but please come back soon." James used to remember her birthday, every holiday and anniversary, always preparing surprises for her. How could a man like that suddenly claim not to love her? She couldn't bring herself to believe it. She didn't want her marriage, whether at the beginning or end, to remain shrouded in mystery. He must have his reasons, and she was determined to find him and get some answers.
