Chapter 8: Can't Find the Words

658 Words
It wasn't even afternoon yet when James had someone deliver all the daily necessities upstairs. Lisa could only force a bitter smile. Was he so eager to get her out of here? "Your test results are in." William walked into the room with an expressionless face and handed the report to Lisa. There was a hint of ruthlessness in his eyes. "Intracranial tumor, possibly malignant." It was like a bolt from the blue. Lisa stared at the eight big words on the report, feeling her body go weak, and she slumped to the floor. "Normally, this should be given to your family, but considering your family's current whereabouts, you should be more aware than I am. So, I'll just tell you directly. Surgery can extend your life by 5 to 20 years. However, if postoperative care isn't done well, it's prone to recurrence and metastasis. I hope you can discuss this with your family." Lisa still couldn't believe it as she stared at the report. She kept looking at her name and age, feeling like the information on this piece of paper couldn't possibly be about her. But every detail was accurate, forcing her to accept the harsh reality. Why was life so cruel to her? Her brother had passed away, her husband had betrayed her, and now she was disfigured. Lisa thought she had suffered enough, but it turned out that fate had never intended to stop playing tricks on her. Now, the doctor was telling her that she had a malignant brain tumor? Lisa's hands trembled slightly. "How much does the surgery cost?" "Approximately 500,000 dollars." Lisa hesitated for a moment. "And if I don't have the surgery, how long can I live?" William spoke coldly, "Less than a year." The report slipped from her hand and fell to the ground. For a moment, Lisa truly didn't want to go on. She had already used 600,000 dollars from the bank card to pay off her debts, and the remaining 100,000 was for her medical treatment and her brother's funeral. She didn't have the money for the surgery. Even if she did, the surgery would only extend her life by a maximum of 20 years, and she was only 26! Why wouldn't fate ever give her a break? "The tumor is spreading rapidly, so I hope you can make a decision as soon as possible. If you don't have enough money, you can ask him for it." Lisa was stunned for a moment before she realized who William was referring to. "He's your husband, so naturally, he won't ignore you." With a simple sentence, Lisa burst into tears. Was he still her husband? He was already married to Olivia now, and they even had a child together. What was Lisa to him? "Thank you for your concern, Dr. William. I'll think about it." Lisa sometimes felt that the man before her had some similarities to James, but they were also completely different. James had never been this gentle with her. "Do you not want to get treatment?" Lisa didn't say anything. Who wouldn't want to live a few more years? But she had already been crushed by James to the point where even her last ounce of pride was gone. How could she persuade herself to lower her head and beg James to give her 500,000 dollars, even if it was a matter of life and death? She couldn't do it. Even if it was life-saving money, she couldn't find the words. "If I were him, I would hate this submissive attitude of yours." Lisa's heart ached, and she glared at William. "What do you mean?" "The thing men hate the most is a woman who agrees to everything!" William picked up the report and threw it at her. "If I were you, I'd take this report to that mistress's hospital room right now. At least, before you die, you'll know if you ever crossed his mind!"
