Sofia Heaven Smith stood at the doorway of the small kitchen, watching as her daughter, Moonlight, twirled in the living room. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting a warm glow that made Moonlight’s dark curls shimmer as they bounced with every spin.
“Mama! Look! Look!” Moonlight giggled, her tiny feet moving in circles, arms flailing like wings, her face alight with joy.
Sofia smiled, though her heart felt heavier than usual. She had spent the morning trying to figure out how to tell Moonlight about the surprise awaiting her. How do you explain to a three-year-old that she was about to meet her father for the first time?
“I see you, my little ballerina,” Sofia said, leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed. She glanced at the clock. They had a little time before they had to leave, but the thought of what was to come made her stomach twist.
Moonlight stopped abruptly, a proud grin on her face, her curls sticking out in all directions. “Mama, did you see? I go spin-spin like da 'inas!” she exclaimed, using her special name for the ballerinas she loved watching on TV.
Sofia walked over, crouching to be at eye level with her. “I saw, baby. You’re getting so good at it.”
Moonlight beamed with pride. “I’mma do it for Daddy, too!”
The words hit Sofia softly but deeply. Moonlight knew about her daddy—or at least, she understood the idea. For the past year, Sofia had been explaining in simple terms that her daddy wasn’t around but loved her. Now, the moment had arrived, and the man who had only existed in Moonlight's imagination was about to become real.
Sofia smiled, even as her nerves tightened. “That’s right, baby. Today is a special day.”
Moonlight looked up at her with wide eyes. “Speshul day? Is it birfday?”
Sofia chuckled, brushing a stray curl from Moonlight’s forehead. “No, it’s not your birthday.”
“Chrismas? We gonna see Santa?”
Sofia sat on the couch, motioning for Moonlight to join her. “Come here, baby. Let me tell you.”
Moonlight scrambled onto the couch, her legs kicking in excitement. “Wha’s da 'prise, Mama?”
Sofia pulled her into her lap, holding her close. She could feel the weight of the moment pressing down, knowing what she was about to say would change everything.
“Remember how we talked about your daddy?” Sofia asked, keeping her voice gentle.
Moonlight nodded eagerly, her curls bouncing. “Uh-huh! Daddy far ‘way.”
“That’s right,” Sofia said, her heart tightening. “But today, he’s not far away. Today, you’re going to meet him.”
Moonlight’s face lit up in excitement, eyes wide. “Today?! We gonna see Daddy?”
Sofia nodded, trying to control her emotions. “Yes, baby. You’re going to meet him today.”
“Wha’s he look like?” Moonlight asked, wiggling in Sofia’s lap. “Does he have a big smile like you?”
Sofia’s throat tightened. “I think he’ll smile when he sees you, baby. He’s tall, and he has dark hair like yours.”
Moonlight’s eyes widened in awe. “Like me?” she gasped, as if it were magic.
Sofia laughed softly, hugging her tighter. “Yes, like you.”
Moonlight touched her curls, imagining her daddy’s hair just like hers. “I wanna hug him! And give him kisses, Mama! Can I?”
Sofia’s heart melted. “I think he’d love that, Moon. But remember, this is new for him, too. We’ll take it slow, okay?”
Moonlight nodded, her excitement barely contained. “Okay! I can do slow.”
Sofia took a deep breath. This was the moment she had dreaded and anticipated for months—introducing Rainer to Moonlight. For years, she had shielded her daughter from the complexities of their story. Now, that separation was ending, and Rainer was stepping into his role as father. What would it mean for them all?
“Daddy gonna like my dress?” Moonlight asked, twirling to show off her yellow sundress. “I wore my pwetty one for him!”
Sofia smiled and kissed her head. “You look beautiful. He’s going to love it.”
Moonlight giggled, hopping off her lap and spinning around the room. “I’m gonna show Daddy my twirls! And my bunny!”
Sofia’s heart swelled with love and the weight of the unknown. Would Rainer connect with Moonlight, seeing the bright, spirited child Sofia knew so well? Or would his distant world make him cold?
She sighed softly. “We’re doing this,” she whispered.
Moonlight stopped and ran to grab her stuffed bunny. “Mama! Bun-Bun’s comin’ too! Daddy gotta meet him!”
Sofia smiled. “Of course, Bun-Bun can come.”
Moonlight kissed the bunny’s ear before hugging it. “Daddy’s gonna like Bun-Bun, right?”
Sofia’s chest tightened at the innocence of her daughter’s hopes. “I think so, baby.”
Moonlight cuddled next to her again. “I’m ready, Mama. I’m weady to meet Daddy.”
Sofia stroked her hair, holding back the rush of emotions. “You are, aren’t you?”
Moonlight nodded firmly. “Uh-huh! I gonna show him I’m big girl.”
Sofia’s smile was bittersweet. Moonlight’s world was about to change in ways she didn’t yet understand, but her joyful spirit would guide her. Sofia had to trust in that, and trust that Rainer would see it, too.
She glanced at the clock again. It was almost time. Taking a deep breath, she stood and reached out her hand. “Alright, Moonlight. Let’s go meet your daddy.”
Moonlight eagerly grabbed her hand, and together, they stepped into the unknown.
