Chapter 6

Weeks slipped by, and despite her efforts to forget about it, the letter remained incomplete. Each time she sat down to finish it, her hands hesitated, and uncertainty clouded her thoughts. What if sending it was a mistake? What if she risked turning her daughter’s life upside down by opening a door that should stay closed? To avoid the nagging thoughts, she threw herself into her daily routine. She worked hard, took her daughter to the park more often, and packed their schedule with activities. Yet, even in their happiest moments, the unresolved questions lingered in her mind. Her daughter’s innocent query stayed with her like a shadow she couldn’t shake. One Saturday, while they were enjoying swimming , her daughter asked again. This time, her voice was softer, more pensive, but still tinged with the same yearning. “Mommy, why doesn’t Daddy live with us? Does he not love us?” The question pierced her heart anew. Her daughter’s wide, questioning eyes searched hers for an answer, but what could she say? The truth was tangled in complexity and pain. “No, sweetheart,” she murmured, pulling her daughter into a gentle embrace. “It’s not that. Your daddy... he doesn’t know about you yet.” Her daughter looked up at her, confused. “He doesn’t know?” She nodded, struggling to hold back her tears. “No, he doesn’t. But one day, I’ll tell him. I promise.” The answer seemed to satisfy her daughter for the moment, but the conversation left her feeling empty inside. She couldn’t keep avoiding the truth. That night, after putting her daughter to bed, she sat at her desk, determined to finish the letter. But just as she opened her laptop, her phone buzzed with a message. It was from Gem, as if her friend could sense the turmoil weighing her down. “Thinking about the letter?” Gem’s message read. “Yeah. I can’t stop thinking about it, to be honest.” “You’ll know when the time is right,” Gem replied. “But don’t wait too long. Sometimes, the right moment doesn’t come unless you make it happen.” Her friend’s words hit deeper than she anticipated. She had been waiting for a perfect moment, a clear sign that she should reach out. But perhaps Gem was right—maybe she had to create that moment. The following morning, feeling a new resolve, she finished writing the letter. She included everything important—how their lives had evolved since they last met, the unexpected pregnancy, and most crucially, the daughter he didn’t know existed. She was honest but careful, not wanting to overwhelm him, but still aiming to convey the weight of the situation. After reading the letter several times, she finally folded it into an envelope. She held it in her hands, feeling its weight, as if it symbolized years of unspoken truth. This letter had the potential to change everything. But as she sat there, staring at it, doubt crept in once again. What if he rejected them? What if he didn’t want to be a part of their daughter’s life? What if this letter only brought heartache? For hours, she debated sending it, pacing as she imagined the different outcomes. In one scenario, he welcomed the news with open arms, eager to be a father. In another, he pushed them away, accusing her of hiding the truth for too long. Eventually, fear won out. She tucked the letter away in the drawer of her nightstand, telling herself she would send it another time. But as the days passed, the letter remained untouched, gathering dust. The courage she had gathered to write it slowly faded, replaced once again by hesitation. As weeks rolled by, she fell back into her daily routine. Life carried on, and her daughter seemed content for the time being. Yet deep down, she knew this was far from over. The lingering question about her father would always be there, casting a shadow over their otherwise happy lives. One evening, as she helped her daughter with a school project, a phone call disrupted the calm. It was Gem, her voice filled with urgency and excitement. “Hey, I’ve got some news. Are you sitting down?” Her heart raced. “What’s going on?” “I think you should check his social media. There’s something you need to see.” Feeling a bit nervous, she opened her phone and found his profile. What she saw made her stomach drop. He had posted a picture of himself at work, laughing with colleagues. But it wasn’t the photo that rattled her—it was the caption. "Big life changes coming soon. Stay tuned." The words seemed harmless, but they sent her mind spiraling. What sort of life changes? Was he relocating? Getting married? She ran through a million possibilities, each one making her more anxious than the last. “I think you need to tell him now,” Gem’s voice interrupted her racing thoughts. “Before it’s too late.” Her hands trembled as she clutched the phone. “What if he’s moved on? What if I missed my chance?” “It’s not too late,” Gem reassured her. “But it will be if you don’t act.” That night, sleep eluded her. She stared at the ceiling, torn between fear and necessity. The letter, still sitting in her drawer, was a reminder of the unfinished business she had been too scared to address. But now it felt like time was slipping away. Whatever “big life changes” he hinted at could be her final chance to tell him the truth. By morning, she had made up her mind. She wasn’t going to send the letter. She needed to speak to him directly—honestly and face-to-face. It was the only way to clear the air, to reveal the secret she had kept for so long. But how could she do that when they were in different countries? Though her options seemed limited, one thing was certain: she couldn’t wait any longer. After dropping her daughter off at school, she made a decision. She would contact him today, find a way to have that conversation, and tell him everything. Whether it was through a call, a video chat, or something else, she had to make it happen. There was no more time to waste.
