Damien was looking at me like he wanted to kiss me, and I really hoped he would. Yet he seemed to stop himself before he could fully surrender to the call of the night and the dream of this moment.
Instead, he lifted me back to my feet, and we continued dancing normally. He was still smiling, softly, so I was smiling too. But the carefree moment we had shared just a few seconds ago was gone, replaced with something more guarded now.
Damien’s walls had come back up, and with them, I started to remember why I was also trying to keep him at arm’s length.
