“I understand,” Cara said and went back to observing her charge. Cara was determined to prove herself. She felt responsible for losing Amelia, who then was attacked. None of us really knew what happened, why Amelia would sneak out to her own doom, and she wasn’t able to tell us. But my parents and I didn’t blame Cara. Amelia wouldn’t want her to blame herself. Yet, this desire to prove herself meant that Cara was giving even more to her duties than usual, and with as overprotective as I had been feeling lately, I was pleased for it.
