Perhaps Jake truly did trust his pack to run without him. His father was the former Alpha, after all, and perhaps could step in while Jake was gone.
But it still felt too unfair, too messy. Too much could go wrong. Jake was taking too big of a risk for me, when we were only friends.
“My mind won’t change, Amelia,” he said, reading my face. “Once we are safe, we can discuss this further. For now, you are my sister Jean, and I am your brother Charles.”
I lifted a brow. “Brother and sister?”
“It seemed the easiest way to be sure that I’d be able to see you once you were taken in,” Jake said. “Family are often allowed visitation while friends are not. Are you opposed?”
