As our car drove up to Claire’s, I pulled into the driveway behind the enforcer who was presently charged with watching her. Claire might not have been healthy for exile, but she was still under house arrest.
When I first pushed for that, I had received some kickback from the pack about confining a sickly woman, especially one who had been so beloved by the people of the pack. But when I reminded them that Claire had conspired to kill Amelia, who was now dead, those dissenters quieted.
They went entirely silent when Claire’s own parents took my side, complimenting my mercy. They had loved their daughter until the end, but not what she had done, and made that abundantly clear to all who would listen.
