Five years ago, in the past, Ari age 15 and Nik, age 29.
They had arrived home just before dawn.
The Romanov's private doctor had been called and had been ordered to check Ari over first, much to his brother's amusement.
With her feet properly cleaned, covered in ointment to stop infection and ease her pain, and then wrapped again, Nik dressed her in one of his shirts before tenderly tucking her into the bed in the room next to his and giving her a chaste kiss on the forehead. He reluctantly left her to rest, after one last lingering look at his sleeping angel and made his way downstairs to meet Mishka and the rest of his brothers.
Pushing open his office door he was quickly knocked off balance and let out a slight groan of pain as he was attacked by his youngest brother Alexander (family call him Sasha).
" You're alive!" Sasha shouted dramatically grabbing Nik in an unbreakable bear hug before wincing in pain as Misha slapped him around the head.
" Not for long if you keep squeezing his broken ribs, you Mu-dak (russian for dickhead or asshole)! " Mishka exclaimed, rolling his eyes playfully before chastening his younger brother with a slap around the head.
" Sorry! I am glad you're okay, bro and made it home, " Sasha replied, releasing Nik from his embrace as he scowled at his brother Mishka and rubbed the back of his head.
Nik looked at his brother fondly and gave him a brotherly pat on the shoulder before making his way behind his desk and sitting in his chair, gratefully accepting the glass of vodka Mishka had poured him before he did so.
" Yep, glad you're home Bro...although I heard you didn't come home alone and there's now a pretty little angel sleeping in the Devil's lair..." Dmitri (family calls him Dima) Sasha's twin smirked as he also sipped the Vodka Mishka had poured.
Nik swallowed his Vodka and the rush of anger that appeared hearing another man call his angel pretty.
He took a calming breath, then leveled his brothers with a glare before replying, "Thank you for your concerns, brothers, but the girl is not your concern and I suggest, if you want to keep your tongues in your mouth, that you refrain from calling her pretty or any other....compliments."
" Oh and don't touch her, or he'll cut off your hands!" Mishka helpfully added with a smirk.
"Wow... possessive much?" Dima joked.
"You have no idea...she's mine. Moya Angyel, she found me bleeding in the alley near the bus station and patched me up. Probably saved my life by doing so. Also, judging by the fact she was walking around New York alleys in pajamas with bare and bleeding feet, in the middle of the night, she had probably already had a hell of a bad night before she found me." Nik responded, and his brothers' amused and playful expressions darkened instantly.
" She was wandering the streets...barely dressed and barefooted... IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT?! " Sasha, the most sensitive of the brothers, shrieked in concern.
"Yes, and despite her own problems, she risked her safety to help a stranger... without Moya Angyel I would have bled out." Nik responded, meeting his brothers' gazes, noticing they changed from horror at hearing how he met Ari to a protectiveness that mirrored his own as they thought about how she had saved Nik's lived despite her own problems.
" Angel indeed." Dima thought aloud, and the rest of the Romanov brothers hummed in agreement.
"So tell us, how you ended up near dead in an alley and what's your plan for the girl?" Mishka asked as he refilled his own then his brother's glasses with a second serving of vodka.
"I was leaving the meeting with the Petrov's, about the plans for our new club when my convoy was attacked on the way home. The car in front and behind, must have had bombs planted as they exploded and, before I knew it, my car was rammed off the road, Ivan (Nik's driver) was killed in the collision and Sergio (Nik's bodyguard) was shot in the head before I was dragged out of the car and drugged." Nik paused briefly trying to swallow the emotion that was threatening to overtake him when he thought of his loyal comrades and friends who were killed. " I woke up a few hours later tied to a chair in a warehouse, I was surrounded by nine masked men who gave me a beat down before leaving. Shortly after another man appeared, he gave me some water and told me he would give me a chance to escape if I did something for him...."
"Let me guess, he wanted money?" Mishka tutted.
" No, surprisingly, he told me he was only working with them because they were his local neighborhood thugs and threatened to hurt and sell his sister if he didn't join them. He offered his help in exchange for my promise that, once freed, I would offer his sister refuge," Nik replied.
" Huh, a desperate man just trying to protect his family...didn't see that coming. It's usually money or power they want in exchange for turning against their own," Dima stated, and his brothers nodded in agreement at his assessment.
" Give me the man's and his sister's names and I will get them out by the end of the day," Sasha vowed, earning a grateful nod from Nik.
" So how did you escape? " Mishka asked.
" The man, Carlo, loosened my restraints and slipped a knife into my hands and told me to wait for his signal. Shortly afterward, explosions went off outside the front of the warehouse and five of the nine guards went to investigate. I assumed that was Carlo's not-too subtle signal, so i struck and killed the remaining guards before sneaking out the back of the warehouse. I walked for about an hour until I was in our territory and then was planning on heading to the safe house near the bus station, but I guess I had lost too much blood and collapsed in the alley, " Nik replied, declining a top-up of vodka from Mishka.
" And that's when your Angyel appeared? " Sasha and Dima, doing their annoying twin thing, asked at the same time.
" Yes, it is Moy Angyel appeared just in time to patch up the worst of my wounds and take care of me until I assume you heard about my abduction and followed the location of my GPS implanted chip to find me, Mishka? "
Mishka nodded in agreement before finishing his vodka and asking curiously, "So that explains your adventure down the alley, but what's your plan for the girl?"
Dima and Sasha scooted closer, also curious to hear Nik's plan.
" It's simple, I take care of her just like she did me. She's mine now. She clearly needs help and deserves a family, and she'll have one. She's too young now, obviously, but she's brave, strong, spirited and kind. She has the qualities that make a good wife and mother and I fully intend for her to be my wife in the future, the mother of my children and the Queen of our Bratva. Right now, however, I will ensure she is safe and has support to grow to her full potential. Then, when she is older and the time is right, I will make her mine... in every way and permanently," Nik declared.
His brothers took a moment for Nik's declaration to sink in, and then they gazed at him in understanding. The girl did possess rare qualities that any man would be lucky to have in a wife and, after what seemed like a tough childhood, she did deserve all the love and happiness in the world, and they were sure their brother Nik would provide that and more for the girl he seemed so utterly smitten with.
She was still young though, legally a child, despite no doubt being wiser and more mature than most people in their 20s and could do with a few older brothers to watch over her and a family to love her and that was exactly what she was. She was their little sister now. Dima, Sasha and Mishka all thought to themselves as they made silent vows to love, support and protect her from that day onward until they could hopefully one day welcome her into the family officially as their sister-in-law.
