Chapter 5
"The tree will mourn and the limbs will shake. The fair's garland must fall to the stripling. She must seek her splendour in the bygone star. The Pillars of Exousies shall break least she forsake her troth. The stripling will turn lion yet the fair his wyzszy." The chamber is as silent as a tomb yet there were more than fifty people in it. The Queen looked green and the young Prince on the verge of tears but he kept his composure and ground his teeth. Ke Ai seems like the only among her family who looked confused. It seems as if her parents, even her younger brother already has an idea of what the cryptic prophesy meant. "Wang, why are you so sad?" she asked her brother through telepathy. Although her brother cannot answer her, at least she can send him comfort. "Don't worry, everything's gonna be okay. I will slay dragons for you, okay?" she joked. But it seems like her brother's expression grew darker. He clinched his jaw and his hands and feet twitched. He gave a surreptitious glance her way with soulful eyes. On ordinary circumstances, he would already have jumped in her arms and hugged her tight. "Dear High Priestess!" Duke Mira, cousin to the King stood and stepped towards the dais. "The prophesy is a bit mysterious. Can you please elaborate?" He reached the level of the High Priestess and stood straight in front of her. Duke Mira is an imposing noble. He is a wise lord and also a trusted adviser to the King. "My interpretation of the prophesy is giving me a scare. The first line alone nearly gave me a heart attack!" "Very well, my lord!" the High Priestess bowed his way. "The Great God of the South proclaimed - The tree will mourn and the limbs will shake!" she revealed. "This means that the Royal family is going to grieve and the entire kingdom will quake in fear." This pronouncement frozen every noble in the room. This is a dreadful pronouncement. They each looked at their horrified faces. The King and Queen held hands even though they have heard this earlier before the Council was summoned. Ke Ai felt as if her heart is about to jump out. She fears for her family. The young Prince no longer able to hold on to his resolve ran to his sister and hugged her. His action broke everyone's paralysis and looked at the stricken lad. He is just a young boy after all. "It's okay my young Prince!" the Queen's soothing voice diverted everyone's attention. "Please continue, my lady!" the King asked the High Priestess. "The fair's garland must fall to the stripling!" she continued. "This came from the Great God of the East! He means to tell us that the crown must be passed on to the young Prince."
This caused an upheaval in the room. The Contessa Aia nearly swooned and had to be helped to her seat. Everyone seems unable to realize that they were all on their feet. The prophesy cannot be maligned as much as they find it preposterous. The gods have spoken and this must be followed through. They are a race whose affinity to the gods is essential to their well-being. All their gifts or powers are associated with the gods. They are taught that the endowment of their powers were gifts from the gods and thinking ill of them is akin to being ingrate. Blasphemy can earn the gods wrath faster than their swiftest carrier. Those who recklessly did never fared well. Some killed themselves after they lost their gifts. Some go insane and others became docile as a rag doll. Others banished themselves and never to return. Nobody knew of their fate. So the gravity of the prophesy may be the most preposterous news they've heard but none uttered a single blasphemy to the gods who spoke through the young priestess.
