Chapter 3
Ella POV
Sleep offered little solace. Instead of rest, I was plagued by nightmares, fragmented memories of a life I desperately tried to forget – a life marked by hidden scars and the constant sting of being unwanted.
Flashback:
"You think you're so special, reading those books? You're nothing but a charity case, Ella. We took you in out of pity, not because we wanted you." My aunt's voice dripped with disdain, her eyes cold and unforgiving. I was barely ten, trying to disappear into the worn pages of a borrowed novel, seeking refuge from their constant disapproval. The words were like a brand, searing themselves into my soul, reminding me that I was a burden, a stain on their perfect facade.
"Look at you, always so mousy and plain. Why can't you be more like Tiffany? She knows how to attract attention, how to use her… assets." My uncle's leering gaze made my skin crawl. I was sixteen, working double shifts to pay for my own clothes and schoolbooks, while Tiffany flaunted her designer wardrobe and effortless charm. I was always the ugly duckling, the awkward outsider who could never measure up.
The memory shifted, morphing into another scene of emotional abuse:
Flashback:
"Ella, darling, fetch me my purse. And while you're at it, clean my shoes. You know how I hate getting my hands dirty." Tiffany's voice was laced with entitlement, her eyes never leaving her reflection in the mirror. I was her personal servant, her unpaid assistant, expected to cater to her every whim. Stripped of my innocence and burdened by their constant demands, I felt like a prisoner in my own life.
"You should be grateful we allow you to live here, Ella. Don't forget your place." My aunt's words were a constant reminder of my dependence, my lack of power. I was trapped, with no escape in sight.
I woke up with a gasp, my heart pounding, my body slick with sweat. The darkness of my small apartment felt oppressive, amplifying the echoes of the past, the constant barrage of criticism and rejection that had shaped me into the broken survivor I was today.
They had chipped away at my self-worth, leaving me vulnerable and scarred. They had taught me that I was unworthy of love, undeserving of happiness.
I forced myself out of bed, determined to fight against the darkness that threatened to consume me. I splashed cold water on my face, trying to ground myself in the present, to remind myself that I was no longer that helpless child.
But the memories lingered, coloring my perception of everything. Was he any different? Was he just another powerful man seeking to possess and control, offering a twisted sanctuary from my pain, only to ultimately break me further?
I shuddered at the thought. His possessive nature both terrified and intrigued me, igniting a dangerous spark of attraction. But I couldn't afford to succumb to his allure. I needed to protect myself, to fight for my freedom, even as I felt myself drawn into his orbit.
As I walked to work, the city seemed to mock me with its glittering wealth and hidden scars. It was a world where power reigned supreme, and vulnerability was a weakness to be exploited.
The diner was quiet when I arrived, the early morning calm before the storm. I started my usual routine, wiping down tables, brewing coffee, trying to focus on the mundane tasks.
But my mind kept drifting back to him, to his cold, calculating eyes, his possessive words. "I'll be back, Ella."
The promise, or was it a threat, echoed in my mind, fueling my anxiety. What did he want? And how could I possibly resist his dangerous pull?
