Chapter - Two

“So Mr. Logan, when was the last time you spoke with Ms. Alonso?” “She got back home early in the afternoon that day, so she had called me for a casual talk. We even made plans for the coming weekend but now-” he trailed off sighing in despair. Ansh patted his shoulder consolingly. “I can understand how hard it is for you but we need your cooperation” he nodded and stared at me. “Ok, so did you get any calls from the kidnappers demanding for anything?” “No sir” he replied. “Did she have rivals or any arguments with anyone recently?” he thought for some time and replied “She has few competitors at work but not to an extent to kidnap her. And yeh, few days back she quarrelled with her brother, Daniel over something. She didn’t mention the exact reason and kept changing the topic whenever I asked her. So even I didn’t force her much” “Ok, that’s all for now. We expect the same support from your side. Don’t worry, we'll do our level best to save her” he nodded with a smile and left the interrogation room.

Mason entered the room with a boy. “Chief, he is the food truck guy” I crossed my arms and leaned back as the boy sat on the chair in front me. “So, why did you d**g the guard's burrito with a sedative? Who made you do that?” “No, I didn’t d**g him. Why will I do that?” he replied with a serious look. “You didn’t do that because if you wanted to you would have done it long back. Someone made you do it. Tell me, who is it? Don’t worry, you'll be safe because this interrogation is confidential” he thought deeply for while and replied “I don't know who he was and how he looked because he wore a black mask with a cap. He told me to add the sedative, which he gave, in the guard's burrito. I said I won’t because it could be dangerous and he was my regular customer, I can’t cheat him. He threatened me with his g*n so I had no choice. I didn’t know that it was a pre planned kidnap” he sighed with a guilty look. “Thank you and we may need your cooperation in future, so don’t leave the city” he nodded and left with Mason.

“Ansh, can you get an appointment with Dr.Ethan for me in the afternoon?” he nodded and called someone. He spoke for a while and ended the call. “Chief, he is busy in a surgery right now, but he'll be free after two hours. But why now Chief?” “While checking Ms. Alonso’s room yesterday I found her diary with appointments. She was meeting Dr.Ethan frequently from past few months, so I felt like I should meet him once to ask about her. Since she is a famous personality in Seattle, were there any rumours about her medical condition?” “No Chief, if she was open about meeting Dr.Ethan so many times, by this time the media would have fired many questions at him regarding her condition. So, it was confidential” “Yeh, you’re right” 

As we were talking, Sarah entered the room with a man. “Please take your seat Mr. Daniel” I said and he sat down. “So, when was the last time you spoke or met Ms. Alonso?” I asked. “A week back, when she came to my home” “So, not even a phone call in a week?” he shook his head with a sigh. “What was the reason? Did you both have a fight?” I asked directly coming to the point. He was surprised initially and later explained “Yes. She came to discuss about our dad's farm house property. He didn’t write it to either of us because there were some issues with that back then. And now that all the queries were cleared she came to discuss about our shares. We decided to sell it. She said she wanted 70% since she is starting a new life with Logan. Even I argued back because my daughter's education is also important. So I finalized a deal of 50% for each, so that it would be fair enough for both. But she wasn’t ready to agree at all. She started the fight saying that it was because of her influence that she cleared all the issues with the farm house and so she wanted a higher proportion. Like that we ended with arguing and she left in frustration. I didn’t try calling her since then. I know, you may feel suspicious about me, but trust me I didn’t kidnap her. I won’t do such a thing with my sister just for the sake of money” “We'll find out that soon Mr. Daniel. You can leave now but you should come again whenever we call you” he nodded and left. There’s a chance of him being a kidnapper since he could have done that to convince her or maybe threaten her. People end up doing many horrible things for the sake of money.

As I was busy in my thoughts someone knocked on the door. It was Stella. I was kind of excited since I hadn’t seen her from morning. Wait, why am I so happy? I cleared my thoughts and listened to her. “Morning Chief. Luna and Sameer have found out something with the evidences which we got from the crime scene” “Good. Let’s head to the forensic lab then” me and Ansh followed Stella. This was my first visit to the lab. It was quite spacious and the blue lightings inside was really good. Cool! Luna was checking something through the microscope and Sameer and checking few papers. They both stared at us as we stood in front of them. “Firstly the shoeprints which we got, there are two of them. Based on their shoe sizes, one guy's height might be less than 5’5” and the other one between 5’7” to 5’9”. We didn’t get any fingerprints other than Ms. Alonso’s” Sameer explained and I nodded. “Smart guys, wearing gloves and k********g” Mason commented. “Well all the criminals have become cautious nowadays and it'll be stupid of them to leave fingerprints because that’s the first thing which we search” Luna replied. 

“So what’s our next move Chief?” Stella asked. “For now, Ansh keep an eye on Daniel and Sarah on Logan. Mason, check with that food truck guy and ask where exactly he met the guy who gave him the sedative. Try asking shopkeepers around in that area if they saw him and check if there are any cameras outside any bigger shops” all three nodded and left. “What about me Chief?” Stella asked with a sad look. She'll be dramatic sometimes and that’s when she looks adorable. Sameer and Luna chuckled by seeing her look. “You’ll come with me to meet Dr.Ethan. We have to know why she was visiting him so many times and mainly why did she keep it a secret”

We both got into my car. I drove silently since I didn’t how to start a conversation, but I wanted to talk and know more about her. “So, what’s your favourite food Chief?” she asked breaking the silence. “What an unusual question asked suddenly” I commented. “Well, we have been silent from the time we have started” “Yeh, because I’m not good with starting a conversation with anyone” “It’s not that tough. Just ask what you want to know about that person. Start with simple ones initially and later link them with whatever you want to know” “Looks like you have a lot of experience” “Hmm.. maybe yeh” we both laughed. We reached the hospital and got down the car. We inquired with the receptionist and headed towards his cabin. 

 “Hello, Dr.Ethan. I’m Dexter Lee” “Oh, hello Dexter. Your teammate did mention about your arrival” we both shook our hands and sat on the seats. “I’m here to discuss about Ms. Jeanine Alonso regarding her missing case” I said. “Oh yeh, I heard about that. I was really surprised” “Yeh. So, Dr.Ethan we have information that she used to frequently meet you from past few months. Was there any serious medical condition?” “Yeh, a year back she met with an accident and stayed in coma for two weeks. It was a serious brain injury and she had to meet me for regular check ups” “Oh ok. But why did she hide it from the public. She became very famous recently but nobody knew about her coming to meet you even though it was just a regular check-up. What was there to hide in that?” “I don’t know, maybe she didn’t like sharing about serious accident in her past” I felt like there was something he was trying to hide even though he was quite confident while saying. Either it was my intuition or I was just overthinking. “See Dr.Ethan, her life is at risk there and we need each and every information about her, even if it was supposed to be confidential between you both. We have to save her, so kindly cooperate” he thought for few seconds and sighed. “Ok, so after she woke up from coma she started feeling kind of weird. The way she analysed things had changed. That’s when I once again scanned her brain and realised that she had savant's syndrome”

“What is savant syndrome ?” I asked. “ It’s one of the rare disorders. Usually one out of ten autistic people have it, but some people usually get the syndrome after having a serious brain injury in the temporal area” “ Oh, so is that why she had been consulting you?” he nodded. “ Usually these people have special abilities, like they get talents which they don’t even remember learning. Usually it’s some sort of art or music , calculating and spatial skills but Ms. Alonso’s was a different case. She has a talent in Research field. She has a great memory and analytical power” he said. “Ok . Thank you doctor” I said and walked out with Stella. “There is something fishy” “What seems fishy, Chief?” Stella asked. “ I don’t know. But this doesn’t seem like a normal kidnap for money. The kidnapper seems to know that she’s a savant” I said while I started to drive. “ Why?” she asked. “No threat calls, no money or jewellery stolen , so, basically this is not being done for her money or fame . It’s either to use her for something or to take revenge on her” I said. “ I don’t think it’s for revenge Chief, because it’s almost been three days since she has been kidnapped . At least by tomorrow if we don’t find her body that means this is not revenge. People who take revenge tend to show that they’ve done it successful” she said. She was right actually “You have a point there and she even has a tremendous talent . Let’s see where this goes” “ Chief, aren’t you hungry?” she asked. “Are you?” I smirked. “ Yes Chief. Can we have something and then go back to the headquarters?” she asked and I agreed.

We went to the nearby restaurant which she suggested and ordered some pasta. I was sitting opposite to her and that’s when I noticed her facial features properly for the first time . She has blonde hair tied up in a messy bun with few strands of hair in front adding to her beauty. She has these amazing blue eyes which reflect her personality well. She was smiling while looking down at her phone. I don’t know why but I just got a bit possessive, but I didn’t show it. “ Boyfriend?” I asked her directly. “ Nope. Just my brother sending some stupid old photos” she kept her phone down and we both laughed. She looked soo beautiful when she smiled. I don’t know what took over me but I told it “ You have a beautiful smile” she blushed. Our food arrived and we started eating. We randomly spoke for a while knowing each other more and started heading towards headquarters.

We reached the headquarters and Sarah was waiting for us “ Chief, I found something on Logan’s diary” she said. “Did you break into his house ?” Stella asked sarcastically. “ He threw this out and I picked it up to check” she said rolling her eyes. “ What did you find in it?” I asked with curiosity building up. “ Chief, four months back a guy was kidnapped. He is Aaron, a painter who became quite famous a year ago. We couldn’t solve his case properly because of lack of evidences. The one thing suspicious is that he was dating Logan back then and they both broke up after a while. Logan wrote in his diary that he met Aaron a few days before his kidnap and that they spent some time sorting few things off between them . He hasn’t mentioned what things but it feels suspicious for me Chief” she explained. “Oh, that famous savant right?” Mason asked and she nodded. “ Savant” I said wondering. “ How many people have been kidnapped in the past one year and how many of them are savants ?” I asked and then they started searching for the files to get the count. I was pacing around in the room and I started to think why they would kidnap her if not for money . She neither has any enemies nor does her brother seem more suspicious. “Chief, we got the list . Almost ten people have been kidnapped in the past year and out of them six are savants” Mason said . “Get me a copy of that list”

Mrs. Marlene Lopez , 35 year old, painter. Kidnapped on January 27th

Ms. Eva Akeeshoo, 24 years old, Owner of Akeeshoo company. Kidnapped on February 25th

Mr. Ronak Smith , 27 years old, Architect . Kidnapped on March 29th

Mrs. Kenna Garcia , 42 years old, scientist. Kidnapped on April 23rd

Mr. Oliver Kane, 33 years old, Police officer. Kidnapped on May 24th

Ms. Emily Brown , 26 years old, Fashion designer. Kidnapped on June 22nd

Ms. Kiara Silva , 32 years old , Lawyer . Kidnapped on July 26th

Mr. Noah Flores , 37 years old, Stand up comedian. Kidnapped on August 28th

Mr. Krunal Nimoh , 29 years old , Physician. Kidnapped on September 20th

Mrs. Jane Sello, 39 years old, Aerospace engineer. Kidnapped on October 21st

“Chief, all have been kidnapped with a month’s gap” Mason exclaimed. Even I had noticed that. “Yeah, when was Ms. Alonso kidnapped? November 23rd. There are high chances that the same person has been doing all of this. How many are savants in these ten?”. I asked. “ There are six savants Chief” Sarah said. “How is it possible?” Stella asked. “ Why not?” I asked her. “ Dr.Ethan said that one out of 10 autistic people have this syndrome . And as per research, 1 in 54 children suffer from autism and soo many people can’t have injury to the brain at the same place. How come soo many savants have been found in Seattle alone ?” she asked. “ She has a point” I said. “ No Chief, none of them are from Seattle. Dr, Ethan and Dr.Hazel are the famous neurosurgeons and councillors in the whole world. So, they would have come here for a check-up for few days and got kidnapped in the meantime. Among these kidnapped people only Ms. Alonso is from Seattle. Five are from different states of USA , three from different states of South America and two from Africa” Sarah replied.

“Do one thing, check all the evidences collected during the investigations of these ten cases and see if there are any similarities like time of kidnaping, any suspicious vehicle spotted, the kidnappers mask or anything . Go through the contact list of the people who gave their missing complaints and find out if they can come to Seattle by day after tomorrow to meet us. Prepare the list. I need all the information by tomorrow. Mason and Stella, go through the contacts and try to get in touch with them. Sarah , let’s start checking the evidences if these files” I said and just then Ansh arrived.

“Chief , there was nothing much suspicious at Daniel's place. He visited his lawyer in the morning. After he left, I spoke with the lawyer and got to know that they had finalized that Ms. Alonso would get 55% share and Daniel 45%. I don’t think he can be the kidnapper Chief because by this time he would have made her change the shares” he said and we agreed. “ Ok. Ansh do one thing, check with who among these ten people visited Dr.Ethan and who was the other one?” I forgot her name. “ Dr.Hazel , Chief” Sarah added. “Yeah . Check with them or their assistants or somehow . Just get me the information of who among these ten visited them” “ Yes chief. On it” he said and left. Me and Sarah started checking through all of their files. This case took an unexpected turn. I don’t know whether I’m going in the right direction or not, but one thing is for sure, we aren’t going to leave it behind like these previous cases until we find that mastermind behind all of this.
