Chapter Three

Everything changed. The air felt heavier than before. Alicia stood her ground, her heart pounding but her face calm. The black car behind her wasn’t just a car—it was a reminder of everything she was expected to be. But for once… she didn’t move. “Miss Alicia,” the driver said again, more firmly this time. “Your father is not asking.” “I know,” she replied quietly. “That’s the problem.” Alex watched the exchange, tension building in his chest. This wasn’t just a disagreement anymore. This was war between two worlds. And he was right in the middle of it. “Go home, Alicia,” he said under his breath. Her head snapped toward him. “What?” “You heard me,” he continued, his voice low but serious. “This isn’t something you fight like this.” “So I should just walk away?” she asked, hurt flashing in her eyes. “Yes,” he said. The word landed harder than anything else. Before she could respond— Another car pulled up. Sleek. Expensive. Familiar. And this time… it wasn’t just a driver. A man stepped out. Tall. Controlled. Powerful. Alicia’s breath caught. “Dad…” Mr. Laurent didn’t rush. He never did. Every step he took was measured, like the world moved according to his pace. His sharp eyes scanned the area before landing on Alex. Judging. Calculating. Dismissing. “So,” he said calmly, “this is where you’ve been.” Alicia swallowed. “I can explain—” “I’m not here for explanations,” he interrupted. “I’m here to take you home.” “No.” The word surprised even her. But she didn’t take it back. Silence fell. Dangerous silence. Mr. Laurent’s gaze hardened slightly—not anger, but something colder. Disappointment. “You’re embarrassing yourself,” he said. “And me.” “I’m not a business deal, Dad,” Alicia replied, her voice shaking but strong. “I’m a person.” “And this?” he gestured toward Alex without even looking at him. “This is what you choose?” Alex clenched his jaw. He had been invisible his whole life—but never like this. Never this small. “I chose to stay,” Alicia said. “That should matter.” “It doesn’t,” her father replied flatly. Before things could escalate— A voice cut through the tension. “Wow… this is more dramatic than I expected.” All eyes turned. A girl stood a few steps away, arms crossed, a slow smile playing on her lips. Perfectly dressed. Confident. Sharp. Watching everything. Vanessa Cole. Alicia frowned. “Vanessa? What are you doing here?” Vanessa shrugged. “I could ask you the same thing… but I think I already have my answer.” Her eyes shifted to Alex. And lingered. “Oh,” she said softly. “So this is him.” There was something in her tone. Not curiosity. Not surprise. Something else. Jealousy. Alex noticed it too—but he didn’t understand it. Alicia did. And suddenly, the situation became even more complicated. Vanessa stepped closer, her heels clicking against the ground. “You know,” she said casually, “people have been talking. Alicia Laurent running around with a… mechanic?” She tilted her head slightly. “That’s new.” “Stop it, Vanessa,” Alicia warned. But Vanessa only smiled. “What?” she said lightly. “I’m just interested.” Her gaze returned to Alex, sharper this time. “Because people like him don’t just appear in your life for no reason.” “That’s enough,” Alex said, his voice firm. Vanessa raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Oh, he speaks.” Tension snapped. Mr. Laurent sighed softly, clearly done with the scene. “Alicia,” he said, his tone final, “get in the car.” Alicia looked at Alex. Then at her father. Then at Vanessa… still watching, still calculating. Everything felt like it was closing in. Pressure from every side. But then, She made her choice. “I’m not leaving with you.” This time, her voice didn’t shake. And for the first time… Her father looked at her not as a daughter But as a problem. The silence that followed Alicia’s words was suffocating. “I’m not leaving with you.” It echoed in the air like a line that couldn’t be taken back. Mr. Laurent didn’t react immediately. That was what made it worse. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm—too calm. “You’ve made your point,” he said. “Now stop this childish behavior and get in the car.” Alicia shook her head slowly. “No.” Something shifted. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But enough. Her father exhaled, looking away briefly as if recalculating everything. “You think this is about love?” he asked, glancing at Alex for the first time. “You think this boy understands the life you come from?” Alex stayed quiet. But inside, something burned. “She doesn’t belong here,” Mr. Laurent continued. “And you…” his eyes narrowed slightly, “…you don’t belong anywhere near her.” That did it. “I didn’t ask for any of this,” Alex said, stepping forward. “She came to me.” Alicia turned to him, surprised. “Alex—” “But he’s right,” Alex added, his voice tighter now. “This… this isn’t your world.” Her heart dropped. “What are you saying?” He looked at her, really looked at her—like he was trying to memorize her. “I’m saying this ends here.” “No.” Alicia’s voice broke. “You don’t get to decide that.” “I do,” he replied. “Because I know how this plays out.” The words hurt more than anything her father had said. “You think I can’t handle it?” she asked, tears threatening to fall. “I think you shouldn’t have to,” he said quietly. Behind them, Vanessa Cole watched everything unfold, her expression unreadable—but her eyes sharp. Waiting. “This is exactly why I told you to go home,” Alex continued. “Look around, Alicia. Your father is here. His world is here. It’s already pulling you back.” “And you’re pushing me away,” she whispered. That hit him. Hard. For a second, his composure cracked. But only for a second. “I’m doing what’s best for you.” “No,” she said, shaking her head. “You’re doing what’s easiest for you.” Silence.
