CHAPTER ELEVEN

AMELIA ROSE'S POV I finally reached my department. I was already breathing heavily from running. I looked at the clock on the wall. Oh my God. I was late. Again. I quickly entered the nurses' station. "Good morning," I greeted everyone. Nobody answered. I looked around. They were all staring at me. "What?" Cassandra walked toward me with her arms folded. "You are late." I sighed. "I know." "Again?" "I know." She shook her head. "Amelia, one day you're going to get fired." I dropped my bag on the chair. "Don't say that. I really need this job." "You need to start waking up early." "I will." "You said that yesterday." "And I'm saying it again today." Cassandra rolled her eyes. "Whatever." I quickly changed into my uniform and tied my hair back. I was about to start my duties when the head nurse suddenly walked in. Everyone immediately became quiet. "Good morning, everyone." "Good morning, ma'am," we all replied. She looked around the room. "Mr. Sterling will be arriving today." I froze. Mr. Sterling? Why did that name sound familiar? The head nurse continued. "He is the new owner of this hospital, and he will be personally overseeing some changes." My eyes widened. New owner? Something suddenly clicked in my head. The man from the elevator. No. It couldn't be. I shook my head. There was no way. The head nurse continued talking. "Please make sure everyone behaves professionally when he arrives." I swallowed hard. Karen leaned closer to me. "What's wrong with you?" "Nothing." "You look scared." "I'm not scared." Before she could say anything else, we heard footsteps approaching. Everyone turned toward the entrance. A group of men walked into the department. And then I saw him. My heart dropped. It was him. The annoying man from the elevator. The man I had cursed the other day. The man I had just told myself to forget. He walked in wearing a perfectly fitted black suit. He looked completely different. Everyone immediately stood straight. The head nurse smiled. "Good morning, Mr. Sterling." My mouth fell open. Mr. Sterling. So he was the boss? Oh no. Oh God. I wanted the ground to swallow me. Maxwell looked around the room. Then his eyes landed on me. He stopped. For a second, neither of us moved. Then his lips curved into the smallest smile. I knew that smile. He remembered me. He slowly walked toward us. The head nurse began introducing everyone. "This is Nurse Cassandra." Cassandra smiled. "It's nice to meet you, sir." He nodded. Then the head nurse pointed at me. "And this is Nurse Amelia Rose." I wished she hadn't said my name. Maxwell looked directly at me. "Amelia Rose." His voice sent a strange shiver through me. I forced a smile. "Good morning, sir." He raised an eyebrow. "Good morning." Cassandra looked between the two of us. She seemed confused. Maxwell turned toward the head nurse. "I believe Amelia and I have already met." My eyes widened. I quickly shook my head. "No, sir." He looked at me. "No?" I swallowed. "I mean... yes." He almost smiled again. Interesting. He was enjoying this. The head nurse looked confused. "When did you two meet?" I quickly answered. "Just... briefly." Maxwell nodded. "Very briefly." I gave him a warning look. He ignored it. Then he turned toward the entire department. "I expect everyone here to follow the hospital rules. I don't care who you are or how long you've worked here. Everyone will be treated equally." Everyone nodded. "Yes, sir." His eyes returned to me. "And that includes people who are always late." My mouth dropped open. Everyone turned toward me. Cassandra covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. I stared at him in disbelief. Was he seriously doing this? I clenched my fists. "Yes, sir," I muttered. Maxwell nodded. "Good." Then he walked away. I watched him leave. The moment he disappeared, Cassandra burst out laughing. "Oh my God!" I turned toward her. "What?" "You are finished!" I frowned. "Why?" She laughed even harder. "You just got on the wrong side of the new boss on your first day meeting him." I sighed. "This is going to be the worst day of my life." Little did I know... It was only the beginning.
