CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

313 Words
DR. STEVEN POV I sat alone in my office, staring at the documents on my desk. Nobody knew the truth. Nobody knew that I was responsible for the medication mix-up. I had planned everything carefully. I wanted to create a problem that would make Maxwell's company look responsible for what happened to the cancer patient. If the investigation continued and the public blamed the company, its reputation would suffer. And when the company's reputation suffered, the stock would fall. That was exactly what I wanted. I leaned back in my chair and smiled. “Only I can solve this problem.” I knew everyone would eventually start looking for answers. But I also knew how to make myself look like the person who could save the company. If I became the one who solved the problem, Maxwell would have no choice but to trust me. And that was only part of my plan. My eyes moved to a photograph of Charlotte on my desk. I wanted my daughter to become Maxwell's wife. If Charlotte married Maxwell, she would become part of the Sterling family. And I would have the influence I wanted. I picked up my phone and called Charlotte. She answered almost immediately. “Daddy?” “Where are you?” “I'm at home.” “Good. I want you to be patient.” She became quiet. “Why?” “Because Maxwell will eventually realize that you are the right woman for him.” She smiled. “I hope you're right, Daddy.” “I am.” I ended the call and looked out through the window. Everything was beginning to fall into place. But there was one problem. Amelia Rose. She had already noticed something strange in the patient's records. I narrowed my eyes. That nurse was becoming a problem. And I couldn't allow her to discover the truth.
