CHAPTER TWENTY

MAXWELL STERLING POV I finally made my way to the meeting with the pharmaceutical department. I was already familiar with the reason for the meeting. We needed to discuss the new cancer drug, especially its possible side effects. When I entered the conference room, everyone was already seated around the table. Ethan was beside me with the documents. I took my seat. “Let's begin,” I said. One of the pharmaceutical department executives opened the meeting. “Mr. Sterling, we have a serious problem concerning the new cancer drug.” I looked at him. “What happened?” He placed a file on the table. “We are being sued.” The room became quiet. I opened the file and started reading. A patient had taken our cancer drug together with another cancer medication from a different pharmaceutical company. Not long after, the patient's condition became critical. The patient eventually suffered severe brain damage and was declared brain dead. I looked up from the documents. “Are they claiming our drug caused this?” “Yes, sir.” I leaned back in my chair. “Do we know exactly what happened?” “We are still investigating,” the executive answered. “The patient was taking our drug along with another cancer drug. We don't know yet whether the combination caused the reaction or whether one of the drugs was responsible.” I looked at Ethan. “Have we examined the patient's medical records?” “Yes, sir,” Ethan replied. “Our medical team is reviewing everything. We are also checking the other medication the patient was taking.” I looked around the table. “This drug is supposed to help cancer patients, not put their lives at risk.” Everyone remained silent. I continued. “We need to find out exactly what happened before we make any conclusions.” The executive nodded. “We understand, sir.” “And the lawsuit?” “Our legal team is already handling it, but the patient's family is demanding compensation.” I closed the file. “Then investigate everything. I want the full report on my desk as soon as possible.” “Yes, sir.” I stood up from my chair. “This matter concerns people's lives. We cannot afford to make mistakes.” Everyone nodded. As I walked out of the conference room with Ethan behind me, I couldn't stop thinking about the patient. Something about the situation didn't feel right. If our drug was taken with another cancer medication, there was a possibility that the combination had caused the reaction. But until we had proof, I wasn't going to blame anyone. I walked toward my office. I had no idea that this problem was only the beginning. And soon, it would become much bigger than a lawsuit.
