AMELIA ROSE'S POV
I walked back to the nurses' station, still thinking about what had just happened.
Why did Maxwell Sterling have to smile at me?
And why did my heart react like that?
I shook my head.
He was my boss.
Nothing more.
"Amelia!"
I jumped.
Cassandra was standing in front of me.
"Where have you been?"
"Mr. Sterling called me to his office."
Her eyes widened.
"Why?"
I sighed.
"Because I'm always late."
She burst out laughing.
"See? I told you!"
"Stop laughing."
She held her stomach.
"I'm sorry, but your face right now..."
I rolled my eyes.
"I hate you."
"No, you don't."
Before I could answer, one of the nurses called for us.
"Emergency!"
We both immediately became serious.
A patient was being rushed into the emergency room.
I quickly put on my gloves and moved toward the patient.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Car accident," one of the paramedics answered.
I immediately began checking the patient's condition.
"Blood pressure?"
"Very low."
"Prepare an IV."
Everyone moved quickly.
I focused completely on the patient.
I didn't notice that someone was watching from the hallway.
MAXWELL STERLING'S POV
I had been walking toward the emergency department when I saw her.
Amelia was different when she worked.
The playful girl I had met earlier was gone.
She was focused, confident, and surprisingly calm.
She gave instructions without hesitation.
"Prepare another IV."
"Check his oxygen level."
"Call the doctor."
Everyone listened to her.
I stood there silently.
Pet walked up beside me.
"You've been standing here for five minutes."
I glanced at him.
"So?"
"You were supposed to be going to your meeting."
I looked back at Amelia.
"I'll go later."
Pet raised an eyebrow.
I ignored him.
There was something about watching her work that I couldn't explain.
She genuinely cared about the patient.
And I liked that.
Very much.
AMELIA ROSE'S POV
The patient's condition suddenly became worse.
"His heartbeat is dropping!"
I immediately looked at the monitor.
"Doctor!"
The doctor rushed in.
"What's happening?"
"His blood pressure is dropping rapidly."
"Get the defibrillator."
Everyone moved quickly.
I stepped back as the doctor began working on the patient.
My heart was pounding.
After several tense minutes, the monitor finally showed a steady rhythm.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The doctor nodded.
"Good work, everyone."
I removed my gloves.
I was exhausted.
I turned around and nearly jumped.
Maxwell was standing there.
He had been watching us.
I stared at him.
"Sir?"
He nodded.
"Good work."
I smiled.
"Thank you."
He looked at me for a moment.
Then he said,
"You handled the situation well."
I couldn't help smiling.
"Thank you, sir."
He nodded and walked away.
Cassandra immediately came beside me.
"Did you see that?"
"See what?"
"The way he was looking at you."
I frowned.
"What way?"
She smiled.
"Like he was impressed."
I laughed.
"He's the boss. He was probably just checking on his hospital."
"Maybe."
She gave me a suspicious look.
"But I don't think that's all."
I shook my head.
"Don't start."
She laughed.
I turned back toward the emergency room.
But deep down, I couldn't stop thinking about his words.
Good work.
They were simple words.
Yet somehow...
They meant more coming from him.
MAXWELL STERLING'S POV
I entered my office and sat down.
Ethan followed me.
"Sir, your meeting is in ten minutes."
"I know."
He placed the documents on my desk.
Then he looked at me.
"Is something wrong?"
"No."
"You seem distracted."
I gave him a cold stare.
"I'm fine."
He nodded quickly.
"Of course."
I opened the file in front of me.
But I couldn't concentrate.
My mind kept going back to Amelia.
Her smile.
Her confidence.
The way she had handled the emergency.
I had met many women before.
Beautiful women.
Intelligent women.
Women who wanted my attention because of my money.
But Amelia was different.
She didn't seem interested in impressing me.
If anything, she seemed determined to avoid me.
And strangely...
That made me want to know her even more.
I leaned back in my chair.
"What are you doing to me, Amelia Rose?"
I whispered.
I didn't know the answer.
But I knew one thing.
I was beginning to look forward to seeing her.
