CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN

713 Words
AMELIA ROSE POV Karen sat beside me, her hands trembling as tears rolled down her cheeks. For a few seconds, she couldn't say anything. I gently placed my hand over hers. "Karen, you can tell me. Whatever it is, I'm listening." She took a shaky breath. "I used to be a hooker." The words came out barely above a whisper. I stared at her for a moment, but not because I was judging her. I was simply surprised that she had carried such a painful secret alone for so long. Karen quickly wiped her tears. "I know what you're thinking." "No," I interrupted softly. "I'm not thinking anything bad about you." She looked at me. "Everyone judges people like me." "I'm not everyone." She lowered her head. "I did things I'm ashamed of. I thought if anyone found out, they would look at me differently." I squeezed her hand. "Karen, whatever happened in your past doesn't decide who you are today." Her eyes filled with tears again. "You don't hate me?" "Of course not." I pulled her into a hug. "You trusted me enough to tell me the truth. That means something." Karen cried against my shoulder. For the first time that night, she seemed relieved. Neither of us noticed someone standing a short distance away. Liam. He hadn't meant to listen. He had simply been walking past when he heard Karen's trembling voice. But the moment he heard Charlotte's name mentioned, his expression changed. He quietly stepped away. Liam already knew Charlotte was dangerous. Now he understood exactly what she was planning. --- LIAM'S POV I pulled out my phone and started working. Charlotte had been collecting information about Karen. Pictures. Messages. Old files. Things she intended to use to destroy Karen. I couldn't allow it. Within minutes, I located the information Charlotte had been preparing. I removed the files from the places where she had stored them. Then I turned my attention to her phone. I didn't want Karen's past exposed. Nobody deserved to have their life destroyed because of something they had done years ago. Especially not by someone like Charlotte. I made sure the evidence Charlotte intended to use against Karen was gone. Then I noticed something else. Charlotte had already prepared a post. She was about to publish everything. I shook my head. "Not tonight." --- CHARLOTTE'S POV I stood in a quiet corner of the party, smiling as I opened my phone. Tonight was going to be perfect. Karen thought she had escaped her past. She hadn't. I opened the folder containing the pictures. My smile disappeared. The folder was empty. "What?" I refreshed it. Nothing. I checked again. Still nothing. My heart began pounding. "No. No, no, no." I searched through my phone again. The pictures were gone. The messages were gone. The files I'd carefully saved were nowhere to be found. I checked my backup. Nothing. I checked another folder. Nothing. "What is happening?" Then my screen suddenly displayed a video. I frowned. It was a private video of me from the past. When I was having foursome My face went pale. Underneath it was a message. IF YOU EVER THREATEN KAREN AGAIN, THIS VIDEO WILL BE RELEASED. I froze. Someone had hacked my phone. Someone had not only discovered my secret but had managed to get into my private information. My hands started shaking. I immediately closed the video. Then I opened my files again. The message was still there. I looked around the party nervously. "Who did this?" My breathing became heavier. For the first time that night, I was afraid. I couldn't expose Karen anymore. Not when someone had something equally dangerous against me. I quickly grabbed my purse. I pushed through the crowd and headed for the exit. "Charlotte?" Someone called my name. I didn't stop. I couldn't. I needed to leave. Now. As I stepped outside, I looked back at the party. Nobody seemed to know what had happened. But somewhere inside that building was the person who had hacked my phone. And whoever it was had made one thing very clear. Leave Karen alone. Charlotte hurried to her car, her hands still trembling. For the first time, she wasn't thinking about humiliating Karen. She was thinking about saving herself.
