Six Herbert had snatched at his dowsing rods on the way to the toilet a few minutes earlier and dashed upstairs to his room, a cloud of alcohol gripping at his seams. He knew that the presence of it would make for difficult dowsing but he wanted answers for his doubts before the night was out. He sat at the edge of his bed, took a number of deep breaths and considered the benefits to his concentration if he were to take the remains of the speed that was still in his pocket. It would take the edge off the alcohol, certainly, but it remained where it was, and in its place fell long, precise breaths.
