* * *That afternoon when he turned on the kitchen faucet to fill the teapot the water came out in weak stream. He let it run until it died completely. Then he calmly set the pot in the sink, told Susan where he was going, and went to find the problem. He took the path through the woods and came out on Mokolea Road. From there he walked uphill to where the new supply pipe crossed beneath the roadway. The break was easy to locate; an artesian spring seemed to have erupted from the shallow ditch on the far side of the road. In the ground near the pipe he found, not to his great surprise, a set of deep tire tracks that angled purposefully off the road and passed over the rocks covering the pipe. He plugged the pipe with a stick, drenching himself in the process, and walked back
