Fidgeting anxiously, I took deep breaths to calm myself as the elevator doors dinged, opening at the second floor. 3 of the people on the elevator stepped out with me, scattering to different areas. I made my way to the right, reciting the directions the nice receptionist had given me over and over in my head.
Walking down the hallway, I realized it was divided into two wings. I walked into wing A, checking the numbers on the door until I got to room B3.
Knocking softly on the door, I only had to wait for a few seconds before hearing a low female voice telling me to come in.
I pushed it open, stepping inside and felt a blast of cool air rushing over me. I took a quick glance around the office, instantly noticing the minimalistic but warm decorations that filled the room. A tastefully decorated desk was placed dead center in the office with comfortable looking leather chairs in front of it and one behind.
A beautiful middle aged woman sat on the chair and looked up at me when I entered.
“Good morning ma’am”, I greeted her as I shut the door behind me.
“Yes, good morning”, she gave me a small polite smile,”How can I help you?”
“Well I am here for the interview ma’am and the receptionist directed me here, to look for Mrs. Sawyer”, I explained.
“Oh”, she said, her smile becoming a little more genuine. “Have a seat”, she pointed to the seat by her right and I squared my shoulders before walking to the table and taking a seat.
She stretched out her hand for a handshake and I quickly placed my hand in hers. Her palm was soft but her grip strong. She scanned me and gave me a firm handshake before releasing me.
I sat down and a small sigh escaped me at how comfortable the chair was. I raised my head to find her observing me.
“I’m Linda Sawyer”, she said, introducing herself, “Head of HR, you can call me Mrs. Sawyer”. I stared at her, quickly realizing that she would most likely be the one conducting my interview.
“Nice to meet you Mrs. Sawyer”, I said, “My name is Maya Rose Richards”.
She smiled at me again before sitting up in her chair.
“I’ll be conducting your interview miss Richards. Since you already the online interview, I’ll only be asking a few questions, ok?”
I nodded before gathering the courage to ask the question that had been on my mind since I applied for the position. “Um..a question Mrs. Sawyer”.
“Yes, go on”, she answered.
“Um…am I allowed to know who I will be working for if I pass the interview?”
She chuckled slightly, “I understand this is a weird situation for you, Miss Richards but if you pass the interview, you will of course be informed of who you will be assisting”.
I nodded and shifted in my seat slightly.
“Alright, let’s begin the interview then”, she said “I’ll only ask a few questions and we’ll be done”.
I cleared my throat slightly, nervousness and anticipation twisting my gut.
“What are your aspirations for the future?” She asked, “Do you still see yourself working as an assistant in the coming future?”
“When I applied for this job Mrs. Sawyer, I applied with the intention of moving up the corporate ladder. I’m not gonna lie and say the salary and benefits didn’t tempt me, cause they did, big time”, she chuckled a little at that, “But working in such a large corporation has always been my dream. Standing at the peak and showing off my achievements, proving my worth to both myself and others. That’s the reason I worked my ass off for years trying to put myself through college. And now, here I am. So there’s no way I’m going to let the opportunity waste”.
She nodded at my words, looking thoughtful.
“I looked through your records miss Richards, and it stated that you’re an orphan”, she glanced at me as if to confirm her words and I nodded.
“How do you think being an orphan has affected you miss Richards? How has it shaped you?”
She was staring at me as she asked the question and I determined she was testing me, trying to gauge my strength. She was figuring out if I would let my past experiences affect my future, affect my work. I was strong though, I hadn’t gone through 23 years of hardships for nothing. I wasn’t going to let my past keep weighing down on me.
“As you just said Mrs. Sawyer, I’m an orphan. Abandoned at 8 months and no recollection of who my parents might have been. I have gone through hardships over the course of my life. Moving from one foster home to another, working multiple jobs everyday. I believe that going through such has strengthened me and shaped my life, teaching me how to be patient and endure. I am proud of myself you know, cause I have worked hard to get everything I need”.
She observed me for a long time, nervousness eating at me before letting out a small humming sound.
“Patience”, she said, “That’s a good mindset you have miss Richards, one you need to keep. You’re hired, you’ll start on Monday.”
I stared at her in utter shock, feeling like my ears were playing tricks on me.
“What did you say?” I asked
She chuckled, “You’re hired miss Richards”.
I felt tears welling up in my eyes, I couldn’t believe I had gotten the job.
“Thank you very much”, I choked up, wiping tears from my eyes, “Thank you so much”.
“You’re welcome miss Richards and congratulations. Welcome to the team”. I laughed as we shook hands, happy tears clouding my sight. She helped me up, leading me to a table by the side where she showed me the contract I had to sign. I quickly read through it, signing the contract since I found no problems.
Mrs. Sawyer escorted me to the door, mentioning some company rules.
“By the way miss Richards”, she paused slightly, “You will be working directly under the CEO as his assistant. He isn’t around so I won’t be able to introduce you. I’m also sure this news is quite shocking so you’re free to go now. I’ll show you around the company when you resume on Monday, see you then ”.
I stood there in shock as she stepped back into her office, shutting the door behind her.
The CEO, I was hyperventilating, the president of Crawford Enterprises, Sebastian Crawford.
Oh my God.
I had no idea how I got home, I simply found myself standing in front of my door, key in hand.
Now all I had to do was wait for Monday.
