Chapter 46People left their cars parked along the road and crept close to watch. On Kauai everyone carried umbrellas. Now the sea of colored rain gear multiplied along both sides of the road. A crowd had gathered. What was it about seeing accident scenes that incited interest? Rain soaked officers held back the gawkers. The police shielded the accident scene by hanging sheets of yellow plastic tarp around the exposed sections of the sedan. Kuamo'o Road was glutted with cars needing to simply bypass the wreckage. Drivers honked rudely from the distance, not realizing what had taken place ahead of them. The local newspaper photographer arrived, her equipment shouldered.
