Chapter 6: He passed

858 Words
Daryl couldn’t stop smiling as he stared at the paper in his hands — the results of his interview. He had passed. Unlike in his first life, where his ambitions were crushed because of Robert Williams’ interference, this time was different. This time, he had won. As he was about to leave the department, his eyes caught sight of Mr. Henry Davis again. The older man seemed to be on his way out as well. Without wasting a second, Daryl hurried to catch up with him. “Mr. Davis!” Daryl called out. Henry stopped and turned, his face lighting up with a warm smile when he saw Daryl. “Mr. Grey! How did it go? Did you pass the interview?” Daryl’s grin widened, and he nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, Sir! Thank you. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have passed this interview.” Henry chuckled, shaking his head. “That’s not true, Mr. Grey. You passed because of your own skills and determination.” Daryl scratched the back of his head, feeling a mix of pride and humility. That was true — his abilities had carried him far. But no matter how talented he was, he knew Robert Williams would have found a way to block his path if not for the help he’d received. “I truly have no words. Thank you so much,” Daryl said sincerely. “You don’t have to thank me,” Henry replied with a kind smile. “I only came here because a friend of mine spoke highly of you. And it looks like he was right. You are… quite an interesting one.” Daryl’s brow furrowed. “A friend of yours?” “Martin Anderson,” Henry clarified. “He told me about you. I hope that one day, we can sit down for a chess game as well.” Daryl froze for a moment, his mind clicking everything into place. So it had been Martin’s influence that helped him get this far. A slow, satisfied smile spread across his face — his decision to get closer to Martin Anderson had been the right one. “Of course, Sir. I’d be honored,” Daryl replied smoothly. “Well, I must be going. You’ve got a long road ahead of you, Mr. Grey. I look forward to seeing you reach the top.” Daryl nodded, his eyes gleaming with quiet determination. “That’s the plan, Sir.” He watched Henry Davis walk away until the man disappeared from sight. Only then did Daryl turn and head for the exit — ready for whatever came next. — The sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the lavish Williams mansion as Robert Williams stormed inside, his face twisted with rage. He still couldn’t believe it — how could Daryl Grey know someone like Henry Davis? A man of power and influence. He was heading straight for his office when the sight of his wife and daughter in the sitting room made him pause. Carmen was sitting beside Samantha, trying to soothe the girl, who was crying uncontrollably. Robert’s forehead creased with irritation as he approached them. “What happened? Why are you crying?” Carmen looked up at him, her face tight with anger. “That bastard! He broke our daughter’s heart!” “Mom, please…” Samantha whispered through her sobs. “Who?” Robert demanded, his patience thinning. “Who else? That Daryl Grey!” Carmen spat. “He dared to break up with Samantha! Who does he think he is, huh? He’s nothing!” Robert’s jaw dropped at the revelation, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. Furious, he kicked the small glass table in front of them, sending it crashing to the floor. Carmen shrieked and immediately pulled Samantha into her arms, shielding her from his outburst. “What is wrong with you?!” Carmen cried, her voice shaking with fear and anger. “The nerve of that man!” Robert roared. “Who does he think he is?! First, he makes a fool of me at the state department, and now he dares to humiliate our family like this?!” His eyes burned with rage. “He will pay for this!” “What do you mean?” Samantha asked, her voice still trembling. Robert took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down enough to sit on the couch. “I found out he was having an interview at the police department. I went there myself… but I had no idea he had connections to Henry Davis.” Carmen’s eyes widened in shock. “Henry Davis? The deputy minister?” “Yes!” Robert spat. Samantha and Carmen exchanged stunned glances, their anger giving way to confusion and disbelief. “But… how?” Samantha whispered. “Daryl wouldn’t know someone like him…” “That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out,” Robert said, his teeth gritted. “He must have done something… pulled some strings I don’t know about. But make no mistake — this won’t end here. I will make sure Daryl Grey pays for everything he’s done to us.”
