Verse 2 Maury awoke to Joe’s dulcet pounding on his door. The mattress beneath reminded him that he was alive with an exotic form of the uncomfortable. There had been mattresses he despised before in every crevice of Europe, bags of lumpy lumps that invaded his muscles and wounded him for the day. This was different as the mattress was thin and sallow and never resisted his weight. Occasional silver metal springs burst through the fabric to prick his flesh like mushrooms that mysteriously appear after a dark night.
