Ariella's POV
Echoes of jeers and laughter reverberated off the gymnasium walls as my classmates teased and taunted me. I was surrounded by Viola and her gang, their eyes filled with cruel delight. I struggled, but two of her supporters held me firmly, making escape futile.
Advancing towards me, Viola tapped the curling iron handle she wielded with her perfectly manicured nails. She came well-prepared. The iron was plugged into a nearby socket, its glowing coil casting an ominous, orange hue across her smug expression.
"Do you know why I like this game, Ariella?" she purred, her voice laced with false sweetness, each word feeling like a poisoned dagger aimed at my resolve.
I clenched my jaw, refusing to give her the satisfaction of a response. My silence only seemed to amuse her more, her eyes lit with a cruel spark.
"Oh, come on, Ariella," she taunted, leaning closer so I could feel the heat radiating from the iron. "Don't you want to play along? It could be fun... for me."
She held the iron just inches from my skin, relishing the anticipation. The other students watched, their faces a blend of fear and excitement, like spectators at a gladiatorial arena.
My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic drumbeat echoed in my ears. The smell of sweat and gym socks mingled with the metallic tang of fear, creating a nauseating cocktail that churned in my stomach.
Viola's smile widened as she slowly lowered the curling iron to my arm. The coil made contact, and an unbearable wave of pain surged through me. I bit down on my lip so hard I tasted blood, determined not to give her the satisfaction of hearing me scream. The searing heat was excruciating, and seemed to burn through to my very soul.
The acrid smell of burning flesh filled the air. I could feel the skin blistering and charring under the intense heat, the pain so sharp it brought tears to my eyes. I glanced around at the faces of my classmates, searching for any sign of empathy or remorse. There was none. They were entranced by the spectacle.
Viola finally lifted the iron, leaving an ugly, red welt on my arm. She studied her handiwork with a satisfied smirk. "There, isn't that better?" she said mockingly, as if she had done me a favor. I could barely see through the haze of pain and tears, but I met her gaze with as much defiance as I could muster.
"You're pathetic," I spat, my voice trembling but resolute. "This... This doesn't make you powerful. It makes you a coward."
Something flickered in Viola's eyes for a split second—surprise, maybe, or anger. But it was quickly replaced by that cold, unfeeling mask she wore so well. "Coward, am I?" she said softly, her tone dangerously low. "We'll see about that, Ariella. We'll see just how brave you are by the end of tonight."
With that, she tossed the curling iron aside, and it clattered to the floor with a metallic thud. The burn throbbed painfully, but I refused to show weakness. I wouldn't give her that pleasure.
The other students looked between us, their expressions a mix of shock and morbid curiosity.
Viola turned to them, her demeanor shifting back to one of control and authority. "Alright, everyone," she announced, her voice carrying the weight of command. "Time to get ready for the main event. Let's see if our brave little Ariella can survive the night."
As they dispersed, I remained on the floor, clutching my burned arm and trying to steady my breathing. The night's horrors were just beginning, and I knew I had to prepare myself for whatever twisted games Viola had in store. But no matter what happened, I promised myself one thing: I would not let her break me. I would endure, and I would survive.
The announcement of the hide-and-seek game had filled me with dread. Swansea School had a twisted tradition, and the previous year's events were burned into my memory like a brand. It was a nightmarish spectacle that had played out with cruel precision. The girl chosen last year, a quiet and timid sophomore named Emily, had endured unspeakable humiliation. They had dragged her into the boys' bathroom, forcing her to drink from the filthy toilet.
The image of her tear-streaked face, her desperate gasps for breath as they pushed her head down, haunted my nightmares. The degradation didn't end there.
They had tied a rope around her waist and hoisted her up into a tree, leaving her dangling like a grotesque ornament. Her screams had echoed through the night, mingling with the laughter of her tormentors. She had dropped out shortly after, a shadow of her former self, and no one had done anything to stop it. Not the teachers, not the administration—no one.
As vice president of the student union, Viola had the power to select the target for this year's hide-and-seek. Her position gave her an unsettling amount of influence, and she wielded it like a weapon. The student union was supposed to be a body for student welfare and activities, but under Viola's reign, it had become a tool for her sadistic games. She thrived on the fear and suffering of others, her icy demeanor masking the depths of her cruelty.
When the time came for the announcement, Viola took the podium with a flourish, her presence commanding the room. The large assembly hall was filled with the entire student body, a sea of faces blurred into an indistinct mass. My heart pounded in my chest, a sickening rhythm that seemed to echo the inevitability of what was to come. The air was thick with anticipation, and I could feel the collective breath-holding of my classmates.
Viola's eyes scanned the crowd with predatory intent, her gaze lingering on each student for just a moment too long. It was a power play, a reminder that she held our fates in her hands. I tried to shrink into myself, to become invisible, but I knew it was futile. My history with Viola, the endless cycle of bullying and torment, made it clear that I was a prime candidate for her twisted games.
"Good evening, everyone," Viola began, her voice dripping with false cheerfulness. "As you all know, tonight is a very special night. Our annual Christmas Eve hide-and-seek game is a cherished tradition here at Swansea, and this year will be no exception."
Her words were met with the crowd's murmur of excitement and apprehension. I felt a bead of sweat trickle down my back, my body tense with dread. Viola's gaze swept the room again, and this time, her eyes locked onto mine. The corners of her mouth curled into a smirk, a clear indication that she had found her prey.
Viola tapped the microphone and grinned maliciously. “You know the rules. This year’s target for ‘Hide and Seek’ is…”
My heart raced as she paused dramatically, scanning the crowd. A cold sweat formed on my brow.
“Ariella Vega!” she announced with a triumphant smirk.
The crowd murmured with excitement, and all eyes turned to me. I swallowed hard, my mouth suddenly dry.
“No way, not Ariella,” one of my classmates, Jessica, whispered to her friend. “She doesn’t deserve this.”
I clenched my fists and stood my ground. “I’m not playing your stupid game, Viola,” I said, my voice shaking with anger.
Viola raised an eyebrow and smiled even wider. “Oh, but you don’t have a choice, Ariella. You know the rules. If you don’t hide, the punishment will be even worse.”
I glared at her, refusing to back down. “You’re sick, Viola.”
She shrugged, feigning innocence. “Just tradition. Now, you better start running. You have ten minutes to find a good hiding spot. After that, the hunt begins.”
I turned on my heel and bolted out of the auditorium, the sound of laughter and jeers following me. As I ran through the hallways, I desperately tried to come up with a plan. There was no way I was going to let Viola win. Not today, not ever.
I found myself running through the darkened campus, my breath coming in ragged gasps. Every shadow seemed to hide a potential captor, every rustle of leaves a warning. I was exhausted, but stopping was not an option. If I were caught, the punishment would be severe.
The game was simple: hide and seek. But the stakes were terrifyingly high. I had to evade capture until midnight, but it felt impossible with so many students participating. My legs burned with the effort, and my lungs ached, but I couldn't afford to rest. I darted between buildings, but every potential refuge seemed too obvious and too exposed.
I could hear them behind me, their footsteps pounding on the pavement, their voices calling out to each other. They were closing in, and panic surged through me. I ducked into a narrow alley between the science building and the library, pressing myself against the cold brick wall.
The minutes dragged by, each one an eternity. I strained to hear any sound, any indication that they had found me. My mind raced, recalling every escape route, every hiding spot I had considered. But it was no use. There were too many, and I was only one.
Suddenly, a flashlight beam swept across the alley, and I held my breath, praying they wouldn't see me. But luck was not on my side. "There she is!" a voice shouted, and the chase was on again.
I sprinted down the alley, my feet barely touching the ground. I could feel them gaining on me, their shouts growing louder. Desperation gave me speed, but it wasn't enough. A hand grabbed my arm, and I was yanked backward, stumbling and falling. Finally, I felt hands grabbing at my arms, pulling me to a stop.
I struggled, but there were too many of them. They dragged me out onto the playground, and I knew what was coming. My heart sank as I saw Viola standing there with a triumphant smirk.
“Well, well, look who got caught,” Viola said, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. “Looks like the game is over, Ariella. Guess it’s time for your punishment.”
The crowd around us murmured with excitement, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. I looked around, hoping for some sign of mercy, but there was none.
I closed my eyes, trying to summon the strength to endure this.
The memories of last year's victim flashed through my mind, and a cold dread settled over me. I would not beg. I would not give them the satisfaction.
The students moved in, and I braced myself for what was to come. This wasn’t just about me anymore. It was about refusing to let Viola and her cruelty win.
