There was a buzzing in my head that blocked out all other sounds. I felt numb, the only sensation remaining was the iron grip Varek had on my arm. Like he was worried if he let up at all, I would dash around the corner and confront his mother…and my sister. Mona. The only person in the capital I felt like I could call a friend. She had spent the last weeks lying to me. Pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Or, rather, I guess, pretending not to be someone she was. Worst of all, she was actively conspiring against me. Twice now this has happened. Twice my friends and loved ones, people I trusted, had spent their time and efforts to hurt me in some way. Was I too trusting? Too open? Well, that stops now. I took a step back the way we came from, dragging Varek with me. He still hasn’t let go
