The 60-Second Lie

1036 Words
The clock on the phone changed. 59. Nobody moved. 58. “Who’s phone is that?” Lila whispered. Nobody answered. 57. Emma grabbed it. The screen went black. Then another message appeared. You have until the bell rings. Emma looked toward the library doors. “Bell?” Harper’s face tightened. “There’s no bell during lunch.” 52. Mia backed away from the table. “We need to leave.” Emma grabbed her arm. “Not until you tell us what you did that night.” “I don’t remember.” “You just admitted you lied.” “I was scared!” 47. Lila slammed her hands against the table. “Everybody stop!” The room went silent. She stared at Mia. “What happened after we left?” Mia swallowed. “I didn’t leave with you.” Emma’s eyes narrowed. “Then where did you go?” Mia looked at the floor. “I went back inside.” Harper whispered, “Why?” Mia didn’t answer. 39. Emma stepped closer. “Mia.” “I heard someone screaming.” Everyone froze. “Whose voice?” “I don’t know.” “You heard screaming and went back inside?” “I thought somebody was hurt!” 32. Mia’s voice cracked. “I found Evan.” Lila’s face drained. “Alive?” Mia nodded. “He was bleeding.” Emma stared at her. “Why didn’t you tell us?” “Because he wasn’t alone.” The room became painfully quiet. “Who was with him?” Harper asked. Mia shook her head. “I never saw their face.” 25. Emma grabbed the phone. The screen changed. Wrong answer. Then: You saw the face. Mia stepped backward. “No.” Another message. Look at the photograph again. Emma opened the picture. She zoomed in. The hooded figure stood behind Evan. At first, there was nothing. Then Harper noticed something. “Wait.” She pointed toward the figure’s wrist. A bracelet. Black leather. Silver lettering. LW LenWood. Emma stared at it. “That’s a student bracelet.” Harper nodded. “Everybody got those at orientation.” Lila shook her head. “Thousands of people have one.” “Not like that.” Harper zoomed in farther. The letters weren’t LW. They were L7. Harper’s expression changed. “What?” She whispered: “That’s not a bracelet.” “What is it?” Emma asked. “A tattoo.” 18. The library lights flickered. Then the school’s intercom crackled. Everyone jumped. A distorted voice came through the speakers. “Emma Carter.” Emma froze. The voice continued. “Lila Monroe.” Lila’s mouth fell open. “Harper James.” Harper stepped backward. “Mia Reynolds.” Static filled the room. Then: “Time’s almost up.” 12. Emma looked at the others. “We have to go.” They ran. The library door slammed behind them. They sprinted through the hallway as students passed around them, completely unaware. 9. “Where are we going?” Lila shouted. “The basement!” Harper stopped. “Why?” “Because that’s where it happened.” 7. Mia grabbed Emma’s hand. “We promised never to go back.” 5. Emma looked at her. “We’re already back.” 4. They reached the basement stairs. 3. A bell rang. Not the school bell. Something deeper. Older. A single metallic sound echoed through LenWood High. 2. The girls stared at one another. 1. Every light in the hallway turned red. Then their phones vibrated simultaneously. One final message appeared. WELCOME BACK. Emma looked down the basement hallway. At the very end was a door. A door that had been sealed shut for a year. Except tonight— It was open. ⸻ TEN MINUTES EARLIER Someone sat alone inside the school’s security room. Multiple monitors showed different hallways. The cafeteria. The gym. The library. The basement. On one screen, Emma, Lila, Harper, and Mia stood frozen outside the basement door. A gloved hand reached toward the keyboard. The person typed: PHASE TWO COMPLETE. Then they opened a file. Four photographs were inside. Emma. Lila. Harper. Mia. The person moved to the fifth photograph. Evan Vale. They stared at it for several seconds. Then whispered: “You should’ve stayed gone.” A notification appeared. CAMERA 14 — MOTION DETECTED. The person clicked it. The screen showed the basement. The four girls had entered. But there was something else on the camera. A fifth figure. Standing behind them. The person in the security room slowly leaned toward the screen. “What the hell?” The figure stepped into the light. It wasn’t wearing a hood. It wasn’t hiding its face. And the person watching the cameras recognized them immediately. They whispered one word: “Impossible.” ⸻ BACK IN THE BASEMENT Emma pushed open the old door. Dust filled the air. The room looked exactly how she remembered it. The broken table. The overturned chair. The cracked concrete floor. And the wall. Lila covered her mouth. “No…” Written across the wall in black paint were four names. EMMA LILA HARPER MIA Underneath them was a fifth name. EVAN But someone had crossed Evan’s name out. And beneath it, written in fresh red paint, were four words: HE NEVER LEFT. Harper stepped closer. “There has to be a camera.” Emma looked around. “Why?” “Because whoever is doing this wants us to see it.” Mia pointed toward the ceiling. “There.” A tiny camera blinked above them. Emma stared directly into the lens. “Okay.” She stepped forward. “You wanted our attention.” She looked into the camera. “You have it.” The camera’s red light turned green. A printer suddenly started running in the corner. Paper slid out. Emma picked it up. It was a photograph. The four girls standing in the basement. Taken thirty seconds ago. But there was something in the background. A shadow. Someone standing directly behind them. Emma slowly turned around. Nothing. Her phone vibrated. One final message appeared: TURN AROUND AGAIN. Emma did. This time— Someone was standing there. And she knew exactly who it was.
