After the Shot

THE BELL KNOWS EVERYTHING Episode Six: After the Shot The silence after the gunshot was heavier than the sound itself. Emma couldn’t tell if she was breathing. The darkness pressed in from every direction. Somewhere beside her, Lila whispered, “Is anyone… hit?” No one answered. Then— A soft metallic clatter. A flashlight flicked on. Harper’s hands were shaking as she aimed it toward the hallway. The beam cut through the dark. Empty. No Evelyn. No Calder. No Evan. Just the long concrete corridor stretching into nothing. Mia’s voice cracked. “They’re gone.” Emma stepped forward slowly. “No.” Her voice echoed too loudly. She moved into the hallway. The others followed. The floor was wet. Not water. Something darker. Harper knelt, shining the light closer. “It’s not blood.” Lila frowned. “Then what is it?” Harper hesitated. “Oil.” Emma looked up. The ceiling above them was lined with old pipes. One of them was broken. Something had been dragged through here. Fast. Emma turned. “Calder didn’t get shot.” Mia shook her head. “We don’t know that.” Emma pointed at the floor. “If he was hit, there’d be blood. This is a clean extraction.” Lila swallowed. “Extraction by who?” No one answered. Then— A sound. A bell tone. Soft. Distant. But unmistakable. Harper froze. “Did you hear that?” Emma nodded. “It’s coming from deeper in.” Mia backed away. “I don’t want to go deeper in.” Lila looked at her. “We don’t have a choice.” Emma started walking. ⸻ BELOW LEVEL THREE The hallway opened into a wider chamber. Rows of old chairs lined the walls. All facing a single glass window. Behind the glass— A room. Lit. Active. Harper stepped closer. “That wasn’t on the map.” Emma looked through the glass. Inside the room were monitors. Dozens of them. All showing different parts of LenWood. Classrooms. Hallways. The basement. Even the room they were standing in. Mia whispered: “They’re watching us.” Lila pointed. “No. Look.” One of the monitors showed Calder. He was alive. But restrained. Strapped to a chair. Emma moved closer. “Where’s Evan?” Harper scanned the screens. “There.” Evan was in another room. Standing. Not restrained. Talking to someone off-screen. Emma narrowed her eyes. “He’s not a prisoner.” Mia frowned. “What does that mean?” Before anyone could answer— A voice came through the speakers. Calm. Familiar. Evelyn. “Because he was never meant to be one.” Emma stepped back. The speakers crackled. Evelyn continued: “You’re standing in the observation level.” Harper looked around. “Observation of what?” Evelyn answered: “Of you.” The monitors flickered. Then changed. Now they showed Emma. Lila. Harper. Mia. All from different angles. All recorded. Emma’s voice tightened. “How long have you been watching us?” Evelyn replied: “Long enough to know you’re ready.” Lila shook her head. “Ready for what?” A pause. Then— “The final recall.” ⸻ CALDER On the monitor, Calder struggled against the restraints. He shouted something. The audio cut in and out. Emma pressed closer to the glass. “Can we get to him?” Harper shook her head. “It’s sealed.” Mia pointed. “There’s a door on the other side.” Emma turned. A corridor led around the chamber. She started running. The others followed. ⸻ EVAN They found him halfway down the corridor. Standing alone. Waiting. Emma stopped. “You’re not tied up.” Evan didn’t move. “No.” Lila stepped forward. “Why?” Evan looked at her. “Because I was never the target.” Harper frowned. “Then who is?” Evan looked at Emma. “You.” Silence. Emma shook her head. “That doesn’t make sense.” Evan stepped closer. “It does if you understand what E-16 really is.” Mia whispered: “Tell us.” Evan hesitated. Then said: “E-16 isn’t a person.” Emma froze. “It’s a memory.” Harper shook her head. “That’s not possible.” Evan continued: “A shared one. Built from fragments of fifteen failed subjects.” Lila’s voice trembled. “So Evelyn… isn’t real?” Evan shook his head. “She’s real. But not the way you think.” Emma stepped back. “Then what is she?” Evan looked at her. “A reconstruction.” A pause. Then— “The Bell doesn’t just trigger memory.” “It builds it.” ⸻ THE TRUTH OF LENWOOD The lights in the corridor flickered. Evan’s voice grew quieter. “LenWood wasn’t trying to erase memories.” “It was trying to replace them.” Harper whispered: “With what?” Evan answered: “With E-16.” Mia shook her head. “That’s insane.” Evan looked at her. “Then explain why you all remember the same things differently.” Silence. Emma’s mind raced. The party. The house. The Bell. The missing time. Lila spoke softly. “We were never supposed to remember any of it.” Evan nodded. “But something broke.” Harper looked up. “What broke it?” Evan turned toward Emma. “You did.” Emma stepped back. “I didn’t do anything.” Evan’s voice sharpened. “You were the only one who resisted the full reset.” A beat. Then— “You’re the anchor.” ⸻ THE FINAL SYSTEM A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the facility. Red lights returned. Evelyn’s voice came through the speakers again. “Final recall initiated.” Emma turned. “What does that mean?” Evan’s expression darkened. “It means they’re going to overwrite everything.” Mia grabbed her head. “I can feel it again.” Lila stumbled. “The ringing…” Harper looked terrified. “It’s getting louder.” Emma covered her ears. But the sound wasn’t outside. It was inside. The Bell wasn’t ringing in the building anymore. It was ringing in them. Evan grabbed Emma’s arm. “You have to choose.” “Choose what?” “Remember or reset.” Emma looked at him. “If I remember… what happens?” Evan hesitated. “Then E-16 collapses.” Mia’s eyes widened. “And if we reset?” Evan didn’t answer. Because he didn’t need to. The lights went out. And in the darkness— Emma remembered everything. Not just the school. Not just the experiment. But the truth behind Evelyn. Behind E-16. Behind herself. And for the first time— She understood why the Bell was never meant to be heard. It was meant to be obeyed. END OF EPISODE SIX
