There’s a specific kind of heartbreak that doesn’t arrive all at once.
It doesn’t shatter you loudly or leave you gasping for air in a single moment.
Instead, it settles in slowly, quietly, until one day you realize something inside you has been breaking for a long time.
Audrey Belle didn’t know exactly when it started.
But she knew when she could no longer ignore it.
It was a Saturday.
The kind that used to belong to her and Damian.
Lazy mornings. Random plans. Long walks with no destination.
But now,
Now she stood at the edge of the basketball court, watching from a distance as Damian laughed at something Lina said.
They looked… right.
That was the worst part.
There was no awkwardness. No hesitation. No sense that anything was forced. Lina fit into his world easily, like she had always belonged there.
And Audrey?
For the first time, she felt like she didn’t.
“You’re staring.”
The voice startled her.
She turned to see her coursemate, Tessa, standing beside her with a knowing look.
“I’m not,” Audrey said quickly.
Tessa smirked. “If you say so.”
Audrey crossed her arms, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling. “What do you want?”
“Just wondering why you’re watching your best friend like he’s in a movie,” Tessa said casually.
“I’m not watching him,” Audrey insisted.
Tessa raised an eyebrow. “Then who are you watching?”
Audrey didn’t answer.
Because they both knew.
Later that afternoon, Audrey tried to distract herself with studying.
It didn’t work.
Her mind kept drifting, back to the court, back to the way Lina leaned into Damian, back to the way he didn’t move away.
Back to the way it had all felt so… natural.
Too natural.
Her phone buzzed.
She hesitated before picking it up.
Damian: Where did you disappear to?
Her chest tightened.
For a moment, she considered not replying.
But she did.
Audrey: Had work to do.
The typing bubble appeared almost immediately.
Damian: You’ve been saying that a lot lately.
She stared at the message.
Then typed,
Audrey: Because it’s true.
There was a pause this time.
Longer.
Then,
Damian: Did I do something wrong?
Her fingers hovered over the screen.
Yes.
No.
It’s not your fault.
I’m the problem.
She exhaled slowly and typed:
Audrey: No. You didn’t.
Another pause.
Then,
Damian: Then why does it feel like I’m losing you?
That one hurt.
More than it should have.
Because in a way… he was right.
She was slipping away.
Not because she wanted to.
But because staying the same was becoming impossible.
That evening, Lina called.
Not texted.
Called.
Audrey almost didn’t pick up.
But she did.
“Hey,” Lina’s voice came through, bright but softer than usual.
“Hey,” Audrey replied.
There was a pause.
Then Lina said, “Are you okay?”
Audrey frowned slightly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know,” Lina said. “You’ve just been… distant.”
Audrey looked away, staring at the blank wall in front of her.
“I’ve just been busy,” she said.
“That’s not it,” Lina replied gently.
Of course it wasn’t.
Lina knew her too well.
“I saw you today,” Lina continued. “At the court.”
Audrey’s heart skipped.
“Oh.”
“You didn’t come over,” Lina said. “You used to always come over.”
“I didn’t want to interrupt.”
“You wouldn’t have,” Lina said quickly. Then, after a pause, “Audrey… is this about Damian?”
The question hung in the air.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
This is it, Audrey thought.
Another chance.
Another moment.
Say it.
Tell her.
Tell her the truth.
Her throat tightened.
“I just… need time,” Audrey said instead.
There was silence on the other end.
Then Lina sighed softly.
“Okay,” she said. “But don’t shut me out, alright?”
“I won’t,” Audrey promised.
But even she wasn’t sure she could keep that promise.
The breaking point came sooner than she expected.
It happened three days later.
Small moment.
Big impact.
They were all sitting together again, Audrey, Damian, and Lina, outside the café.
The conversation was light. Easy.
Normal.
Until it wasn’t.
“I told my mom about you,” Lina said suddenly, smiling at Damian.
Audrey froze.
Damian blinked. “You did?”
“Yeah,” Lina said, laughing. “She asked if I was seeing anyone, and I said yes.”
“And?” he asked.
“She already likes you,” Lina said. “I showed her your picture.”
Damian chuckled. “I haven’t even met her yet.”
“You will,” Lina said confidently.
Something in Audrey’s chest cracked.
Not loudly.
But enough.
Because this,
This wasn’t just casual anymore.
This was real.
Serious.
Moving forward.
And she was standing still.
Watching it happen.
“Hey.”
Damian’s voice pulled her back.
She realized both of them were looking at her.
“What?” she asked.
“You went quiet,” he said.
“I’m fine,” she replied automatically.
Lina studied her carefully.
Audrey forced a smile.
“I just remembered I have something to do,” she said, standing up quickly.
“Audrey,” Damian started.
“I’ll see you guys later,” she cut in.
And this time,
She didn’t wait.
She didn’t stop walking until she reached her room.
Didn’t stop until the door was closed behind her.
Didn’t stop until the silence wrapped around her completely.
Then,
She broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just… enough.
Tears slid down her face as she sank onto the floor, her back against the door.
“I can’t do this,” she whispered.
Because it was too much now.
Too real.
Too painful.
She had tried to ignore it.
Tried to be strong.
Tried to be selfless.
But love didn’t disappear just because it was inconvenient.
And pretending didn’t make it hurt less.
That night, something changed.
Not outside.
Not yet.
But inside Audrey,
Something shifted.
Because for the first time, she allowed herself to think the one thought she had been avoiding.
What if I don’t stay silent?
The idea was terrifying.
But also…
Relieving.
Because maybe,
Just maybe,
The truth was the only thing that could set her free.
